Okay well i have run some test, and i have found that this is the best file compressor.
It is called 7zip, 7-zip or p7zip (p7-zip).
I have had the most success with this. It is also totally free!
I am even thinking of making a progam which backs up a certain part of your computer (or all of it, you decide) and places it on another partition.
It wont take up much space, and if your windows partition accidently gets hal.dll deleted, you still have your important files!
7zip is fast and effective!

I think you can do that with a program called "Norton Ghost."
