Hey guys
Im building a computer and i have chosen most of the parts.
(Australian Currency)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4ghz $290
GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3P rev.2.0 $180
Atrix 600Wat PSU $40
4GB RAM 800mhz 2 x 2GB $110
Lite On 20x Burner SATA $45
Seagate 500GB 7200R/PM SATA $140
Tsunami Case $55
---------------------------------------------------------
Total: $860 AU
----------------------------------------------------------
(I know it's a plain case but thats all my local store has)
I havent chosen a video card just yet but its going to be one of these.
---------------------------------------------------
Video Card
---------------------------------------------------
Asus - Nvidia 8800gts 512mb $410
Asus - Nvidia 8800gt 1GB RAM $450
Xpert Vision - Nvidia 8600gt super 512mb $140
Xpert Vision - Nvidia 8600gt 512mb $140
So my question is:
Is this a good motherboard?
Should I change any parts?
Are all these components compatable with the motherboard?
Should i buy the 8600gts or gt?
RAM QUESTIONS ( Important )
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Should i buy 2x2GB or 4x1GB on a 32 Bit OS?
If i'm running Windows XP 32 Bit, will it only use 4GB/3GB/2GB if i'm running on 2x2GB?
Should i get this ram: Crucial Ballistix (2x2gb 800mhz)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148183
or buy same Crucial Ballistix but 4 x 1GB?
Tnx for ur help Very Happy

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4ghz $290: good. Can be overclocked to 3GHz easily with that mobo.
GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3P rev.2.0 $180: also good. Not the best, but it'll work for what you need.
600 watt PSU: Should be good. A 500w could probably run all you have, but whatever.
RAM: I suggest 1x4GB.
-each stick is under less load, so they'll all last longer.
-if a stick dies it's not nearly as important.
-if a stick dies it'll cost less to replace.
DVD Burner: Whatever, not important. The DVD drive isn't used much anyway.
HDD: That's fine.
Case: Isn't too important.
Video card: Get an 8800GT, no question. The 8600GT/S isn't close to half as good as the 8800GT. If there's no other choice, take the ASUS 512MB/1GB 8800GT. The 1GB video card will have a slightly better performance than the 512MB, but the difference won't be very noticeable.
Should i buy 2x2GB or 4x1GB on a 32 Bit OS?
4x1 for reasons already stated.
If i'm running Windows XP 32 Bit, will it only use 4GB/3GB/2GB if i'm running on 2x2GB?
It should use only 3GB either way.
Should i get this ram: Crucial Ballistix (2x2gb 800mhz)

or buy same Crucial Ballistix but 4 x 1GB?
See above.

First questions (not RAM):
1. Good motherboard (at least I think), but I don't really think you need all those extra things. GA-P35-DS3L is what I have, and it looks good. In other terms, what I mean is that it might be better to trade it for a GA-P35-DS3L mainly because of the price difference.
2. Parts look good to me at this moment (except graphics card - explained later).
3. Yes, all the components should be compatible with each other.
4. I highly recommend you to avoid the 8600GTS/GT, as both of them are extremely slow in playing modern games (Crysis for example) on large wide screens. I would get the 8800GTS 512MB, the extra 512MB found in the 8800GT doesn't benefit it, only at ultra-high resolutions.
RAM Questions:
1. I wouldn't get either setup. 32-bit OS can only recognize 3.25GB of RAM, so you aren't really using all of it. In order to use it all, you must use a 64-bit OS. 2GB is what really most people need, 3GB at the most. 4GB is too much, unless you are doing tons of photo/video editing, remixing, etc.
2. Either setup (both 2x2GB and 4x1GB) will be recognized by a 32-bit OS as 3.25GB. The OS can't use all that RAM as well either, so if you truly decide to get all 4GB, then get a 64-bit OS to get the most out of it.
3. Like I said, 4GB is overkill. The price is also kind of high for even 4GB of RAM, but that's expected from high-end Crucial Ballistix. I would go for the 4x1GB set if you're sure you're not going to upgrade RAM, because you have a somewhat less chance of getting defective sticks, and you're using all 4 slots (not sure if that's how dual channel works, probably wrong, you'll probably only need to use two sticks). But that's in my case. In your case, I would recommend the 2x2GB, but I'd rather you stick with just 2GB or 3GB of RAM, rather than 4GB.
