If I have a bunch of apps installed but not running will that slow down my computer? I ask because when I was very inexperienced with computers my parents would tell me to delete some programs.

having to much unused crap will slow you computer down a bit, but if its a start up programs like HP Printing shit will use resources that could be put to better use

Programs don't slow your computer unless you're using them.
You use your programs a lot, even if they aren't running and being used.

They can, but it won't be much. If your disk is cluttered with unused shit, and you have used programs near the end, it may take a half a second longer to open it.

Run Disk Defragmentor.

No, non running programs don't take any CPU processing time. They just take longer to open since the files are more unorganized. Like the dude above me, run Disk Defrag. You'll be fine. Most parents are fairly ignorant when it comes to computers and seriously have no idea what slows down their computer, so they start thinking of random things that they believe will. Even I, in some aspects, still are ignorant in some computer aspects and I'm still trying to figure out what is myth and what is fact.
