|
|
My roommate is planning on getting a desktop so that he can play games on it. (Currently he has a Mac Book Pro.) And I've been looking around and so has he. So Ive been trying to decide which desktop to point him at. I do know that he is trying to stay under 800$, and less is better because the money he saves on the desktop, he will spend on a good monitor. And I doubt that he would want to build one himself.
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3581365&Sku=M975-2007
http://www.woot.com/ (I don't know how long that one will stay on the front page, so I'll post the specs under this.)
(The Woot.com computer)
* Intel® Core 2 Q6600 2.4GHz Quad Core Processor
* 3072MB PC2-5300 RAM installed (two 1024MB and two 512MB modules)
* 500GB 7200 RPM SATA II hard drive
* DVD ±RW 18X multi-format dual layer drive
* NVIDIA GeForce® 8500GT 256MB with DVI and VGA
* 15-in-1 media card reader
* Integrated 8-Channel (7.1) High Definition Audio
* 56K ITU V.92 ready Fax/Modem
* Microsoft Vista Home Premium Installed
Where else could I look for cheap desktops that would be able to play most games. And be able to decently (30fps at least) play Crysis on Med-High settings.
Is that possible for under 600$? Or would he need to go upwards to 800$ for that?
Any help would be appreciated.

NVIDIA GeForce® 8500GT 256MB with DVI and VGA
That's the bad part. Maybe it'll be able to get a playable frame rate at low settings on Crysis. You need something better, like an 8800GT/9600GT to play Crysis with a decent frame rate at medium-high settings.
I'm currently building my own computer loaded with a 9600GT (or maybe an 8800GT if the price drops even lower than $180). Right now, the total I'm spending is $500, but I already have the RAM, HDD, DVD Drive, wireless card, and speakers. I think you can buy a whole computer under $600, but it will use either a cheap dual core or single core processor in order to upgrade the graphics card. You can get something that does well in Crysis within the $600-$800 price range. But that's considering you build your own computer. Prebuilts charge hundreds of more dollars, some of it going to shipping.
The setup would be better if the hard drive size and RAM was decreased (to 250GB, 2GB), and trade that for a better graphics card.

I was just looking at Woot.com. I check it everyday Anyways, that computer is pretty bad...The video card kills it and it's refurbished. You might find hair balls in your heatsink.

I would agree with superweapons that video card was the shit before, but now you need something better.
COD4 will not play with that card not Gears of War.

Yeah, you wanna make sure you get a good graphics card, because without, not only will you not be able to play that many games on anything other than low settings, but buying a great monitor would be pointless, because you would have no decent graphics for it to display...

That's what I was thinking would be the problem, but I didn't know how well the 8500 compared. I'll make sure to bring that up with my roommate.

They'll play, but 60fps is out of the question.

I'd reccomend buliding it yourself, I don't know a ton about pc's get a good processer, video card, sound card and graphics card if he wants to play good games.
200 GB should be enough space.
That's what I reccommend for a pc mainly used for gaming

Well my roommate does not want to have to build it himself. I asked him yesterday how much he was going to spend on his desktop and he said around 500$.......
*sigh* I'll have to talk him into at least trading in for a newer graphics card. I think I'll try to talk him into getting a 9600GT or 8600GT(S?) instead of an 8800GT since I think they are close enough to each other to not have that big of a drop in quality, but the price difference would be in his favor I think.
If this was mine though, I'd totally be building it myself. That's what I did for my last desktop five years ago.

$500! That's going to be really hard to build, don't even consider a gaming computer that cheap that's prebuilt.
The only prebuilt ones you are going to find have integrated graphics or an HD2400Pro or 8400GS.
If he already has a desktop, you can just upgrade his graphics card for him. It'd be a lot cheaper than buying a whole new computer.
