|
|
Ok, let me explain my situation:
I'd read some things about IDA debugger/dissasembler/whatever on this forum (in the GP section), and so I decided to give it a try. I downloaded it, popped open Minesweeper, and I played around for a little bit, whoopity doo dah. Then, I tried to debug the code, to find the address of a certain function, and at first it started well, but then IDA complained about an exception, and I let it pass that in. Whatever.. then my comp started lagging like crazy, so I went to Task Manager, and tried to kill Steam (I'd brought up the Steam Ad to close it, and that froze up), then my computer just kinda froze period.
I rebooted, and first tried "Start Windows Normally"... it tried to boot up, but just kinda froze at a black screen. Then, I rebooted, and tried Safe Mode. It froze at "gagp30kx.sys" or something along the lines of that (it was pretty far down the list).
Next, I tried Safe Mode with Command Prompt, and the same thing as regular Safe Mode.
So what do I do?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Edit:
It mentioned something about "STDP.sys" both times I tried Safe Mode. I think the sentence was
"Press Escape to cancel loading STDP.sys" or something. I tried both ways,l and still nothing. _________________

Did you create a Restore Point? What are you running? XP? Knowing you tried everything, unfortunately, my friend, yes your computer is presumably dead. Go to a PC repair shop, they may be able to remotely boot it, they did that on one of my computers. It costs somewhat of a lot, but if you want to keep all your data and not keep a fried computer in your home, you may want to consult them. Unfortunately, there is no other way, for if the computer is not booting, obviously there is something wrong. What happened is that the IDA modified a Registry file or deleted a boot file and/or corrupted another one. That is why the boot sector is registering a file termination. Something went tragically wrong with a boot or critical system file. Unless it was replaced or debugged, your computer just got owned by an IDA. Never knew they could do that, but Minesweeper has roots within the Registry. I don't mean to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't know if there is much you can do. _________________

Yeah, I've created a restore point--I do that right after I install XP, and not really much afterward. =/
If I go back to the restore point, do I get to keep all my data or no? =(
Also, my dad told me to check out the Ultimate Boot CD, which I'm doing now. I've downloaded it onto the laptop and burned it to a cd, which I've put in the computer. I've seen an option before, but I can't find one right now that allows me to boot from CD.
Any help?
Edit:
Whoops--I feel kinda stupid. I simply burned the ISO to the cd. I just mounted it with Daemon Tools, and I'm burning that to a new cd, and I'll try that.
If it doesn't work, I'll just reinstall Windows--my dad said that I won't lose my data--unfortunately, I'm gonna have to reinstall everything. -.- _________________

Alright, Restore Points only work at the moment that they are created. Meaning that if I made File A and created a Restore Point, but then created a folder named "N00B" with Files B&C and suddenly my computer suffered from a massive boot sector virus, after I restored the computer (just barely) I would only keep File A. File B&C would be gone, like they never happened. A restore point is going back in time. It works just that way, so the future never happened if you revert to the past. I don't really remember what happens if you try to reinstall Windows. You might lose your data, hopefully you won't. I never had to, . By the way, one last thing, Daemon Tools is absolute s--t. I use a program called "Virtual Disk Manager" or something of that nature. It is a Windows program that runs deep within the system, but does the same thing as Daemon Tools without Radiant Advertising (an adware program that manifests itself on your computer). I tried it out once, thinking that it would be better than the program I had used before and promptly uninstalled it. It is clunkier and it does much less than I want it to. Here, I linked you to the second page of this helpful article which has the Windows app I was talking about, the first talks about creating an .ISO from a CD/DVD, this page talks about mounting it. http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=406936&seqNum=2 _________________

what i would do at that moment is install the harddrive into another pc and make a backup of everything you want to keep, after that, reformat the bitch. _________________

Alright, well, I found my dad's premade UBCD, and I'm booting from that right now (next time I make a cd or something, I'll check out that link--thanks ;) ).
It's got this menu:
Code: |
[F1] Mainboard Tools
[F2] Hard Disk Tools
[F3] Filesystem Tools
[F4] Other Tools
[F5] User-defined Tools
[F6] DOS/Linux Boot Disks
[F7] INSERT for UBCD
[F8] Boot first hard disk
[F9] Boot second hard disk
[F10] Drop to Console
Please select an item (firs thard disk will boot after x minutes)
|
the X is a variable--when I first got it up, it said, 5, but now it says 3.
I'm gonna check out the Filesystem tools _________________
