Youd think it would be better, but most benchmarks say it isn't....

7900GT > 8600GT
WHY??!! 8600GT is newer and better? No just newer....

7900GT = High-End Last Gen
8600GT = Low-End This GEn

It kind of applys to this

8800GT = High-End Last Gen
9600GT = Low-End New Gen

I just dont know anymore...

Yeah, it also went way down in price Smile

I just need some opinions... Would you get the 8800GT for 230-240? or the 9600GT for 180/190?

I was reading this somewhere.. I forget where. But this is how they determine cards.

XYXY

Normally, the higher the 1st "Y" is the better. Ermm... Can't really explain it right now. Let me look for the article. Also, the 8800 owns the 9600. I did my research.

Right now the 9600GT is not worth it, wait about 2 or 3 years.

The 8800GT does not 'own' the 9600GT.

While the 8800GT came out just before the 9600 series, it is generally a high-end card (8800)

The 9600 is a mid-range card (600), and costs less.

No you didn't. Notice the numbers 9600 and 8800, the higher the getter, if they are the same type.

Well of course the newer the better. But what is really going to make a big difference is not so much the first number (Unless your choosing a really outdated one. Like 6800 or something) But between the 9000 the one with an 8 for the second number is going to be better. So it makes sense that a high en graphics card (8800) is better than a new mid range card (9600)

They are both good, but the 8800GT is technically (and on-the-charts faster). But the 9600GT steals the position for the best bang-for-the-buck ratio, at least once the price drops another few tens of dollars. The 9600GT does extremely well for having 64 unified shaders, nearly the performance of an 8800GT 512MB.

If you are going for the 8800GT, pick up the 512MB variant, you can find it at Newegg.com for $200. The 256MB version, though unexpected, is really bad compared to the 512MB version which you can find for $20 more.

Best prices I've seen (past):
8800GT 256MB = $200
8800GT 512MB = $185
9600GT 512MB = $180

If you are getting an 8800GT, you might want to get it now, some rumors say that after a while (once the 9600GT prices drop) that the 8800GT prices will slightly rise (though I doubt it). 9600GT has roughly 80-100% of the performance of the 8800GT 512MB, and it beats the 256MB variant. Performance is similar to the 8800GS, but right now it is slightly more expensive. After price drop ($10-$20), stock cards should carry a price tag of $169, and if there is MIR, then maybe as low as $100 in a few months.

8800GT > <insert any graphics card besides 8800GTS 512, 8800GTX, 8800Ultra>
8800GT > 9600GT
9600GT = 8800GS
