There are so many reasons.

A. The only work on known viruses, and usually only on viruses with specific names.
B. Any good programmer can get around a virus program, its just that they dont have to. People being retarded is all one needs to distribute mass viruses/malware. Read the installers.
C. User installed programs are not checked by most virus programs, and if they are its on a very minimal and light basis. People using computers are exptected to be at least semi-intelligent. I.E. Oh, I have no idea what this is, and I don't know how to activate D.E.P. to keep it from really harming something, so I'm not going to do that. People who don't think like this are the ones programmers go after.

Steps to go through either a, you are doing very dangerous/illegal things online, or b, your a first grader:

A. Get yourself a small quick antivirus program like eset's NOD32, and only use the trial, it should be all you need.
B. Stop using a computer.

Most times, if you have a real virus, you don't know it, and your computer is already facked.

Sometimes programmers are nice and leave ways for experienced users to extricate viruses, which means check your task manager for suspicious process like:
A. Ones using 100% of your processor and you dont know what it is.
B. Ones that have suspicious names like IEMON2.
After you've found one, google it, and usually a solution will be available, or its not a bad process. Sometimes viruses will be tricky and replace system processes with their own hacked versions. This can usually be remedied by replacing the corrupted files with fresh ones from either the OS disk, or the internet. Scan all .dlls and .exes claiming to fix things.

If all else fails, Save your personal shit, and do a destructive data recovery. Google how to do this, there are many good tutorials. Usually an OS disk is needed, but for a lot of computers a seperate partition with your OS stuff, and OEM programs is created. Usually an HP or Compaq pc will have this, and you shall see on your boot up that there is a recovery option. Use it, and make sure to scan the media you backed your important stuff to with a virus scanner before replacing it to your reformatted pc.

I've never had any troubles for a long time (getting infected) but I still use an AV, and I've tried them all, and generally know which ones are good.

Who cares if it uses black-listing techniques? With heuristics, some anti-viruses detect nearly 100% of viruses.

If anyone is truly interested in no viruses ever, they can just use a HIPS.
