Hey guys,

I was planning on getting myself a new video card for my PC for christmas this year. At the moment I'm stuck with a primative 16MB Video card (Please, don't mock me lol) and I'm sick of it.

Now, I've found a video card I'd like to buy: http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=236378&Tab=1&NoMapp=0

That card should easily handle all the Source games (Half Life 2, Counter Strike Source etc)

Only problem now is, I'm not sure whether my PC is up to having the video card installed. Im on a Compaq Presario, the 5000 series. I upgraded the RAM and CPU about 2 years back, so here are the specs:

CPU: AMD Sempron Processor 2800+
CPU Speed: 1.6GHz
RAM: 512 MB
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Video Card: NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64 Pro 16MB with TV-out (Compaq Consumer) (RIVA TNT2 Model 64)
Sound Card: Realtek AC'97 Audio

Now, even with a new video card, I shouldn't be able to run Half Life 2. EXCEPT, I went to a website to test my system specs (http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest) and for my CPU speed I got some bizarre results:

"CPU Speed
Minimum: 1.7 GHz
You Have: 1.60 GHz Performance Rated at 2.80 GHz"

What on earth does that mean? I used a program called CPU-Z to check and it reported my speed as 1.6GHz. But according to the above website, my CPU is capable of playing Half Life 2. I did a little check and it kept on saying for all the games that I have a "1.60 GHz Performance Rated at 2.80 GHz".

So, need some advice here...

1: What on earth is going on with my CPU speed? Can I actually play games that require 1.7GHz CPU speed or not?

2: Can my computer handle having a new video card installed?

3: Oh, and does PSU have anying to do with it? Cause all I know is that the back of my power supply a little red switch is set to 230V. Would that be able to handle a better video card?

Thanks loads,

PwNeD

links broken...

1. I'm not sure what the 'rated at' means sorry.

2. if it has the right slot, it should be fine...

3. 230 is pretty low, i'd be pretty iffy with that, but a psu 300-400 shouldnt be too expensive

1: What on earth is going on with my CPU speed? Can I actually play games that require 1.7GHz CPU speed or not? Well i think your computer is actually running at 2.8GHz some how.. i don't really understand this.. You most likely wouldn't be able to play the game... but who knows!

2: Can my computer handle having a new video card installed?
possibly... i didn't get to look at the graphics card.. links dead

3: Oh, and does PSU have anying to do with it? Cause all I know is that the back of my power supply a little red switch is set to 230V. Would that be able to handle a better video card? PSU means everything! my friend just bought a 100 dollar graphics card and he found out he didn't have enough power to supply his graphics card... so now he has to buy another PSU!

1. AMD processors perform more work per clock cycle than Intel processors. That is why a processor with a slower clock speed can be compared to the faster one.

2. Motherboard name please. (Even if you can, your CPU will be a bottleneck)

3. If you are planning on getting a new video card like the 8800GT, get a good 500Watts power supply or better.

Your system seems pretty old, so your power supply doesn't look like it will need to be that major. You should, however, keep in mind on upgrading other things later on so buy something that will be extendable later down the road. I would suggest going with at least a 400watt psu. The video card you linked to is a bit dated too so it won't require anything major.

You can obtain info on your system by doing the following as well:

- Open your Start Menu.
- Goto Run.
- Type in: msinfo32.exe

This will open the System Information utility that comes with Windows. Where you can find some general overview of the parts of your system.

Another free and decent tool to get info on your system is SIW:
