Hello, I am attempting to hack Final Fantasy XI.. I'm pretty sure I know exactly how I'm going to do it. The only problem is, I can't load the process.
I start the game windowed, open cheat engine, click the open process button, and select pol.exe(the title of the process that FFXI runs on) and it doesn't load, it just says "Error opening proces." I can load any other process running on the computer, but not Pol.exe. I've tried it with other programs similar to CE and the exact same thing happens.. Am I doing something wrong?

.sorry if this is a newb question; it's the first time i've used the program so I don't know exactly what I'm doing.

Final Fantasy XI uses anti-hack software, you can't just attach it normally.
You need to make or use a UCE to bypass it.
Just so you know, there is not a lot of client side things for FFXI.

If you know how to get in touch with a guy named Wiccaan, he is one such hacker of Final Fantasy.

UCE is Undetected Cheat Engine.
There are guides on the forums on how to make your own, or you can look for an existing one.

No it doesn't. There is no client side protection for FFXi other then a few API calls to prevent it from running in a window which has already been bypassed years ago and SE has yet to attempt to block it. (They plan to come out with their own window mode sooner or later.)

I'm able to attach to pol.exe (after being fully logged in) without an issue using Cheat Engine 5.3. (No modded version, just the original.) Try reinstalling Cheat Engine.

Really?
I've never been able to connect without a UCE.
I remember a normal CE would not attach and I just made a very basic UCE.
If what you say is true then I don't know why.
As for the window mode, that I knew.
Didn't know about the other one though.
I don't understand why I couldn't connect then though...
Granted this was a few years ago, but still.
Confused

I guess it could have been affected by my language version, but doubted because only translations would be different.
This makes me want to play it again now to see the problem.
Haha.
Mad

Yeah the first time I tried to hack it, CE loaded it. After that, it didn't work. Also tried a few other programs like ArtMoney and TSearch and they did the same thing; would load every process except for FFXI

Still going to try a UCE and see if that works

Ok it doesn't need to be undetected. I just wasn't running it as administrator. I try that and now I can load the process Smile Let me see if I can find the right value now ><

There are some things you can do in FFXi that are, in the sense, considered hacking. But, most of what you will find will be bots. A lot of this game is server sided and not easily altered because of it.

But, like many DirectX games, theres always the few things that must remain client sided as well or the game will look and run like shit.

Firstly, speed hacking can be done client sided 3 methods. 1, which alters your characters speed cap in the game memory, 2 being you altering your system clock to a different time twice, the last one being farther away from the current time that you set first, and 3 changing your characters "stance".

Speed Cap Method:
Like many other games, the rate your character moves is determined by math. Items, abilities, and other actions in the game can alter your movement speed, causing the math to use a variable to multiply in most casts how fast your character is actually going. In FFXi, this value is stored in a float, inside the mob array. The default value for normal walking / running is 4.0.

Stance Altering Method:
Your stance is another thing thats stored client sided to show you what your character is doing. Sitting, standing, fishing, etc. Each has its own value stored basically in an enum. With that, you can alter your stance from standing to riding a chocobo and your character will move as fast as if you were on one. Others will not see you on the chocobo, but you will be moving that fast to them.

System Clock Method:
FFXi is a game that runs with its FPS capped. They cap it using a basic method that calls some APIs such as timeGetTime() and some other various ones which uses your system clock to get the current time, then limits how many frames its allowed to render in that time frame. But, by you boosting the time so far ahead the game tries to keep up with the time adjustment and causes the entire game to speed up.

Now, you will only be able to move faster in a sense. You will not attack, cast, etc. or anything like that faster, as thats all done server side. The graphic will be very fast on your screen, but it will not change to what others will see. They will only see you running really fast.

Keeping that in mind. All of this is detectable to a GM if they spot you doing it. Your movement in the game is logged server sided so be careful if you plan to actually cheat.

The other main thing client sided is position hacking. Your characters model is stored client sided and can be altered to move yourself there. The server does not do client <> server synchronization on everything, more less so not on movement. So if you alter it, you move to that position and inform the server of it and it will accept it. BUT, with that, again, your movement is logged, and SE has added methods to trace this as well. If you try to zone from one side of a zone to another in a certain amount of time, the game will not let you zone until you log out and back in.

Some other various things you can do via memory is just monitoring stuff, as well as changing visuals of things. If you have seen one of my programs for FFXi called Wardrobe, it allows you to wear any armor in the game on your character and change your race, sex, and hair style to any selectable one in the game. (The changes are client side only and no one else sees them and you do not get the stats of the gear you put on.)
