ce can't be it either since it doesn't write to the file.
What you explain is that something wrote to the executable of the file close to the start and it's executing invalid code. (e.g a stupid virus that tried to hook the entry point but didn't take into account that minesweeper starts at 01000000 instead of 00400000 so wrong assumptions causing wrong code execution)

or perhaps just bad luck and a filesystem bug caused it to get messed up? (but still more likely a virus)

Go to the registry, find minesweepers settings, and make sure the mine count is not higher than the actual amount of board spaces (multiply the width by the height). Or if it's set to 1 or 0 it can also do this.

you deleted all the viruses but you didn't delete all the damage the viruses did to your files

you might need to use a restore point then make sure to do a new virus scan because restore points can hold copies of the viruses in the sytem volume folder that virus scans cant touch hoho, so after a restore and cleanup scan you need to delete all the restore points with disk cleanup,

you might end up having to reinstall windows anyhow since your pc has been infected

well i had that problem with my notepad and i had to check my other computer's notepad and it worked, then i copied all the notepad things from the WINDOWS - System32 to this computer (the one with the problem), i rebooted my computer and i run it on the "secure mode"(when u reboot ur computer press F8 and u can run in that mode, it will be all big and slow but u will get no errors of files) i checked the notepad and it worked so i rebooted again and connect normally, finally it worked...
