Development costs and ease stop Linux from being a suitable platform for most releases. Windows and Mac have specific distributions that share backend code making compatibility worlds easier then working with Linux, who has no specification other then what the flavor wants. Linux is great because it is open source and free, but Linux also proves why open source is not always the best choice in the market world.

On top of that, if Linux were to become a preferred platform, developers would have to specifically pick and choose which flavors they would want to support. What comes after that? More arguments that 'x' flavor isn't supported and 'y' flavor should be because 'person' said so. It becomes another fight after developers have already tried to make people happy.

Simply put unless Linux straps down and conforms to some open source standard across all flavors to regulate specifications and makes compatibility more stable, you probably will never see Linux as a prime platform for games. Will some developers branch off and work with Linux? Sure, but you wont see it happen with mainstream games. Especially without only specifically supporting 1-3 flavors. (I don't see many developers going past supporting more mainstream flavors like Gentoo or Ubuntu though.)

I use Linux (Ubuntu) for work.

>Ignores Mac permissions

Great for backing up data.

I installed Ubuntu netbook edition on my mum's 5 year old notebook with 256MB of RAM, considering all she does is read emails/view photos it works perfectly. Faster then Windows, lower chances of viruses - (Unless she's actually looking to get it infected.. good luck with that) and it's free/legal..

I installed full blown Ubuntu onto a first gen netbook that had 4 gig ssd. Ran flawlessly, had an ARM cpu as well.

A car company may hire hundred of engineers and spend millions just on deciding where the cup holder should go. This is the same with Microsoft and Apple as they simplify the use of a operating system, such as a simple click to install a program. It also takes lots of smart people and lots of money to make that happen. This why they're popular and are able to dominate the market where Linux can't. Linux on the other hand, some will have this feeling of being superior when in reality, they all have is their heads stuck of their own asses.

Linux & Ubuntu are great OP's for programmers Smile
Linux and Ubuntu don't run as many drivers to run "Black Ops". I personally don't know that much about Operating Systems but I know enough to know that Linux is mostly Programming based. OR programming as in "Hacking".
That's what my friend uses his for he has a Linux version and a Vista Ultimate, using Linux for programming and Vista for gaming/media, etc.

True, but shouldn't it be the mainstream games coming out with games for all platforms because they're making a shit load of money? I don't think it'd be that expensive to make a build for ubuntu when they have shit loads of people buying their game(s)

I may be wrong... but can linux/ubuntu take full advantage of your hardware like Windows can? It could just not be worth the money it would take, too. From personal experience with people I've talked to, most of em had a second partition with windows on it, and with such a low user-base for linux/ubuntu the cost to port it might result in negative profits. It really is all about money unless you come by a few indie's who haven't sold out yet. Same with any other parts of the entertainment industry. Their question for a project is "Now how can we make the most profit out of these next 2 years?" - might not admit it, but that's how it is behind the scenes.

Post that anywhere else when it's not entirely relative to the topic and I'll ban you.

spam bot bro.

In the linux / windows war, there is only one quote that truly works here.
Quote:
hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid.

Let's see who interprets the meaning of the quote wrong.

Personally, I do not like linux. Having to install dependencies for every application you need is annoying and makes for a bloated computer.
The only uses I could see for linux would be as a work machine instead of a personal machine simply because of the amount of time it takes to get things going.

Remove gaming from computers, Linux does everything Windows does.

There's this kid in my school, he goes around giving games to people and people wonder how he gets them. He just says "torrents, cause I'm pro" around to everyone, now every one thinks he's a computer geek...

And then his parents go around telling the whole world what a genius his son really is just because he can torrent a game <_<

This Indian kid who visited his family in India quite often (once every few weeks) would buy a ton of pirated movies there from the markets and then come back and sell them for like $5. I found out he was doing this, pirated all the movies myself and sold them to people for $4, and it'd be like the next day or two (vs. in the next few weeks). Completely ran him out of business, he's hated me since. I made so much bank on that, my parents were convinced I was a drug dealer, even though they only knew about like a fourth of the money I'd made from that.

That was middle school hahaha.

i think every school had 'that guy' who sold burned discs of shit for $5. this is also kinda how those CHEAP CD KEYS WHOA sites operate, they are legit copies but piss cheap and they just buy huge amounts.

personally i made my fortune (read: hardly) off card games in shop class..
