My next build would be either
Crucial Ballistix 2x2gb 800mhz/1066mhz
or
Crucial Ballistix 2x2Gb 800mhz/1066mhz X2(buy 2 sets for grand total of 8 GB)

My computer is three years old and other than the sound card it has in it currently no new hardware has been added.
(The reason behind the sound card is that my previous one fried. It literally. . fried.)
I have 512MB of ram. . . or at least that's what it says on the computer.
Really, it's 448MB.

used to have around 512
then when my bootleg counter-strike 1.6 froze and went into hibernation when i left the laptop unplugged, it's been cut in half and the computer's much slower.

More RAM will help of course.
Although lets say you have an absolute shit CPU and 8GB of RAM; you won't experience exponential results due to the CPU's performance.
The same thing can be applied to CPU vs GFX card... It's known as a bottleneck.
