I read in an article someplace that Steam makes a whole lot more money when they put games on incredible sales. There was a breakdown of how much more they made at each increment (decrement?) of 10% to the price, to a certain point.
It makes sense, I guess. Steam gripes aside, it's simpler (and usually faster) to buy the Orange Box for $10 than to muck about with torrents/warez. |

The actual profits don't increase nearly as steeply as you'd imagine, I know the article you mean. |

Don't know if it's from the same article, but I found these numbers: this page wrote: | * 10% off = 35% increase in sales (real dollars, not units shipped)
* 25% off = 245% increase in sales
* 50% off = 320% increase in sales
* 75% off = 1470% increase in sales |
I'm not into business at all so I don't know if that's skewed or anything, but it seems that these events have become a sort of sales model for Steam to combat piracy (and it appears to work). |

It's a little misleading, example being:
$50 @ 1k units moved = $50,000
$50,000 (assumed gross income) inflates 14.7 times to $735,000 thanks to sale.
Newell says 75% sale increased actual profits (net income?) 15%... which is far and away from the number we just got.
So one can assume some kind of cost involved. |

That's how VALVe could sell TF2 at $2.49. They made a shitload of money from that because it didn't cost them anything (really). _________________

I find the new sales a little boring. Nothing exciting really.
L4D2 just 25% off. And that's the only good game in the list. _________________

Day 3's sales are now on.
IMO the only notable sale today is the guild wars trilogy for $25. _________________
