Many ways:
1) Crack it.
2) Astalavista it.
3) Buy it.

| You have to look at the disassembly and reverse engineer the algorithm that generates a serial. This could be generated from two different input fields say the user's name and age.

| Sometimes you don't have the algorithm, what if the program had a web application to generate the serial based on input the program would send to the webpage? Since finding a serial isn't always possible because of the aforementioned and variations on the method the only thing we can help you with, if you continue to be so vague, is buying the application and recieving a valid serial.

I have seen that the icon where you click to start up the program is replaced with another icon to bypass trials. Can you explain this?

Do you mean replacing the .exe of a program with another one?
