Try VC++ 2005. The IDE is a little bulky, but the compiler is good.

Dev c++ is by far the best imo. The only reason i ever use visual c++ is if i HAVE to make a GUI.

the VC++ compiler is probably the best you can get for free.

Borland C++ and VC++ are good, but if you think the size is too big, try this one: Code::Blocks
BTW, Dev C++ is sucks when it comes to making DLLs.

EDIT: Isn't VC++ a 30 day trial? Don't you have to pay to register?
