The game I'm currently making a table for, Shadow of the Colossus for PS2, is a linear open world game - the entire game world is explorable at any point but only the 1st, then 2nd, then 3rd etc. enemy/boss gets loaded in when you enter their area after having defeated the previous boss (who's in a different area). The spawning of the boss is triggered by entering a specific region in that area. If you enter the region of a boss that's not next in the order, nothing happens.
How does a game like that keep track of which "stage" it is in, i.e. which boss is next in the order?
I did scans for before and after the 1st fight looking for a value that counts up but couldn't find anything useful.

It could be one of multiple different ways, even as simple as a boolean "is x boss defeated?" 0/1 and if so when entering an area spawn the next boss. In this way it's impossible for the third boss to be available until the second is defeated, after the first, etc.. so the checks in order can work like that, just switches basically.
Otherwise it may track it as cumulative boss kills, but may not start from 0 or 1.. it may even track important information as a counter and base it off of that; it's hard to say by guesswork but you can try a lot of different things. It's an older game so you may be able to find an information repository somewhere online that can help shed some light. _________________
