Value instantly changes back, when NOP'd, doesnt do anything

Hey, so I've found a value that seems to dictate how fast I'm going (0-1 float, guess it's multiplied by walk speed), and it is accessed every a whole lot (like a hundred times a second). Makes me think the speed is actually depends on the value, not just that is never used. I've nop'd out the code that writes to it, but then editing the value does nothing. Help? Thanks in advance :)
