|
|
Quick question, I have a laptop that I'm giving to family. The hard drive only has 128GB (it's an SSD). I want to save them some hard drive space by just installing Windows 10 updates now, and then turning it off permanently by going through the Admin Tools in Control Panel. The two main reasons I want to turn it off for them is to 1) save them hard drive space since the updates take up a lot of space it seems and 2) Some Windows updates cause conflicts and since the people I am giving the laptop to are not the best with computers I don't want them having any issues (and also causing me to have to go there and fix it for them).
My question is, I heard that Windows 10 is a "service" and if I turn off Windows updates that Windows 10 may stop working in the future if it can't update itself. Is this true?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

No. Don't believe everything you read.
You can have windows preview that was released last year and it would still work in 2020 (except being a little buggy like it was upon release).

Correction, the windows 10 PREVIEW build will refuse to boot up if the date is after the release of windows 10
In http://forum.cheatengine.org/viewtopic.php?t=587619 the system i tried had a preview build instead of an full build.
(You can of course still run it if you change the date, but it is still a hassle)
Normal build will likely keep running though, but we'll see in 2020. I currently have a system wih the release of win10 which i never boot up so it never gets updates. Let's see in 3 years and 3 months if it can still function and download updates...

^I was kind of exaggerating to make a point. The preview build was really buggy and not really usable, i wouldn't recommend it at all.
So if it functions fine in 3 years and 3 months, what do i get ?

It shouldn't ever be "disabled" due to not receiving updates, but it will be more of a dangerous OS to use. Many updates are extremely important as they patch up security holes, so I wouldn't suggest turning all updates off.

Protip: You can't. Use a non-cucked OS.

@helenedwards if i remember you can turn off the the updates in the pro edition via GPE, but not on the home edition,
To answer your question the OS should run OK with the updates off, one problem that may arise, is if certain apps within the OS have dependencies on the update service, like say the Xbox app that connects to the internet, it may on launch check to see if its running the latest version and if its not and it cant update it wiil give an error code.
Best of luck if you do manage to turn it off.
