Cheat Engine

What are the requirements for cheat engine to be able to alter a value? For example, I am playing a really old space trading game; I can alter the value of the currency and make more money (boring) but I can't alter the ships mass. To clarify, in the game there are many different kinds of ships you can pilot each with different mass, this mass determines how much upgrades you can purchase for your ship, as you purchase upgrades the mass lowers as it is used to hold the upgrade.

In a nutshell, why can't I use the cheat engine to increase my ships mass and increase the number of upgrades I can install on my ship in the game?

You can. Just need to know what to look for.
I assume you can't increase the mass limit on your ship?
Have you tried finding the value of the current mass of the ship?
And the opposite: total mass remaining on the ship?
Try finding another ship value (armor?) and snoop around the same memory region for the weight value.

If all else fails, search for the mass limit directly.
Keep narrowing the results by doing stuff in-game and rescanning the limit.
Add all of the addresses to your table and change them all.

By the way, have you been search all data types?
When searching float/double, scan for a value between plus/minus 1 of the display.

In the game there are limits to mass on each ship, I was hoping I can override that. I can't find the value of the current mass using the method of "narrowing the results" until the value reveals itself. What do you mean "snoop around the same memory region" and "search for the mass limit directly?" I am currently using cheat engine 6.2, do I need to update?

Best place to start at would be these few links in my signature. It took me a few days to complete them (not a computer genius like others on forum) but now I can do some stuff that makes hacking a game easier for me and not have to wait around for someone else to make a table.

I see those links are for cheat engine 6.4 which looks a little different from my version. Can I update cheat engine 6.2 to 6.4 or do I need to uninstall 6.2 and reinstall 6.4?

If I were you, I would uninstall 6.2 and install 6.4

That is correct. Uninstall the old one.
Be sure to read each screen when installing the new one.
Uncheck all the boxes that want to install bloatware and only install CE.

As far you are concerned, CE 5 will do considering you don't know the basics.

Don't worry about the versions, just start reading and ask for help if you're stuck somewhere.

I have been using the tutorial, however the tutorial and my newest version of cheat engine, version 6.4, don't match up. In the tutorial on the webpage there an option called "decrease value by." I do not have this option.

Under Scan Type all I have is 1. Exact Value 2. Bigger Than 3. Smaller Than 4. Value Between and 5. Unknown Initial value.

You must first do your initial scan.
How is CE supposed to know something decreased before your first scan? Smile
