I heard eating is a direct solution to feeling empty, usually makes me feel full after the fact.
And how not to be depressed? Create a goal, whether it's be more fit, or get a degree and tackle it. Try to become busy with your goal (e.g. take many classes at once), and if you can create some hobbies.
For example:
- I'm working, and also going to a university majoring in computer science. This alone takes away 95% of my free time, the other 5% I use on my hobbies, and friends if they're available. My hobbies include things as simple as playing games on my PS4/PC to going to the gym (as I personally want to get fit, it's a goal of mine), to even creating a website forum for the hell of it (website I'm working on now is http://guild.life )
With that, I use up all my free time, and rarely do I ever just ponder around and get the chance to feel depressed. That's how I combat my depression, and you should try to do the same by becoming busy.

Be greatful for what you have, there are people out there who would kill for what you have e.g. Children dying in Palestine and also do what the guy said above, occupy yourself like getting a part time job

To add to what TheIndianGuy said, it's often common for retirees to become depressed because they are unprepared in dealing with so much free time. I'd say most people are in fact, unprepared in dealing with a lot of free time, so basically the solution is to get back to work in some form, whether it's full time or part time. Now getting that job is a tough thing in today's economy but as long as you develop your lying and cheating skills to do well in interviews, you should be fine.
