While I agree. I think a lot of people just like to joke around about it.

Personally I'm more worried that Facebook now has the ability to influence the direction of the project. We don't know exactly how this will impact the development process, if at all, but we do know that it can if Facebook decides to.

While I see it as a good thing the Rift is becoming mainstream and heavily funded, I'm worried it might be rushed out before it's perfected so they can earn that $300m incentive.

Guys it's blatantly obvious:
Facebook bought OVR for $2b.
Facebook plans on turning a profit (that's inherent of any corporate buyout).
Therefor, Facebook plans on making more than $2b back from the product over any given amount of time (say 5-10 years).
Even if they sell a million units at $250, they're nowhere near breaking even.
I don't see VR tech becoming the new smartphone or tablet any time soon, so they're not going to be selling 100 million units or anything; they must have other plans for profits.
This is Facebook we're talking about, famous for datamining and cross product integration.
Final verdict: Facebook is a virus.

Facebook bought it but it's still the original team working on it and everything. They just want rights for it.

quotes from zuckerburg:

About 40 percent of the time that people spend online on computers is on gaming, Mr. Zuckerberg said, and 40 percent is on social communication.

“You need to fuse both of those together,” he said.

According to a person involved in the deal who was not allowed to speak publicly because he was not authorized by either company, Facebook eventually plans to redesign the Oculus hardware and rebrand it with a Facebook interface and logo.

---

Update: We're on the call now, and Mark Zuckerberg is already pointing out Facebook's acquisition of Instagram as an example of how the company is getting experience buying properties and allowing them to continue to operate independently. Zuckerberg called out virtual reality as one of the computing platforms of the future -- following desktops and mobile -- and yes, talked about building Facebook's advertising into it. Specifically, he talked about the potential of a virtual communication network, buying virtual goods, and down the line, advertising.

---

"We believe virtual reality will be heavily defined by social experiences..."

---

quote from the creator of the oculus:
"Oculus is going forward in a big way, but a way that still lets me focus on the community first, and not sell out to a large company"
