I've decided that going into college it'd be ideal to stop relying on a desktop and purchase a capable laptop. I know it'll most likely be pricey and I'll most certainly get less performance to my dollar than I would a desktop, but I realized I won't be spending too much time by a grounded computer.
I've looked at a few so far; ideally they'd be under $1000, and graphically capable.
This is what has appealed to me the greatest so far:

I like that I'd be able to buy another GPU to run in SLI down the road if I so choose, or another hard drive at that, but I think it'd be capable as-is, so I'm not closing out other possibilities.
I'd consider battery life to be important, but not in a way that I'd take a huge hit performance wise.
Do you have any suggestions for a better laptop in this price range?

That leveno looks decent performance wise but with a 5400rpm hdd you're going to spend a lot of time waiting to read/write files.
I'll keep an eye out for better deals and let you know.

Oh wow, I didn't even notice. Things like the hard drive/RAM I could probably replace not too far down the road, so it wouldn't be a dealbreaker, but it's certainly something to keep in mind. Thanks for pointing that out, and I appreciate it.

I mean if you can deal with a small hard drive, it's not a bad option to just replace the internal entirely with a decently sized SSD (256-320). Something like this is under $250, will make your laptop super zippy and increase the battery life. And then, take the hard drive that was inside the computer and buy the cheapest SATA3;USB3.0 enclosure you can find (under $20). Then you just leave the external in your dorm, or even take it with you if you need it because it'll be a 2.5" form factor anyway so it's small.
I just did this with my laptop. I splooged and got a 512GB SSD and replaced the 1TB that came with the laptop and put that in the external enclosure. My laptop boots Windows 7 in about 8 seconds, ubuntu in 3, and I have a total of 1.5TB of storage which is much more than I know what to do with.

^what he said, I recently got the 124gb version just for my OS and games, everything else I can store/run off of any of my three externals.
I've got like 4.5tb of free space that I'm just filling up with blurays because why the fuck not.
