For the US Army/Navy/Air force. requires top secret clearing among other things.
Took the ASVAB and DLAB and scored not near perfect scores 80/99(my math is shitty) but very high. might consider going into the army to pay for college.
The DLAB assesses your ability to learn a language and the ability to apply it immediately.
Idk if you guys wanna discuss or not but I thought it's worth sharing. I've researched into this profession but it has little to no info besides basic info videos. looking to discuss

Well I would be going for at least 3 years (contract). 10 weeks for basic training then from 6 months to however many months/years it takes to learn the language proficiently, then complete my duty wherever it is required. currently required translators include, but not limited to, arabic, mandarin(chinese), korean, russian. These are the most needed at the moment, but from what i have learned from a relative who went in for a similar job, you can choose whichever language you wish to learn and go on from there.

Afaik cryptic linguist means you have to learn not only the language but all the secret terms and references to drugs and bombs and shit like that, so you can listen to conversations and figure out what they actually mean.

I've made programs that do encryption/decryption with reversible cellular automata if that qualifies me

Pick any other branch except for the army. They're a massive clusterfuck of shitbaggery and lazyness. They have zero operational standards, and for all the funding that they get, they are extremely inefficient not only with their training, but with their performance.
Air Force is a better choice than the Army, but know that they are extremely idiotic when it comes to being selective. If you're expecting to make a career out of this through the military, do not go into the Air Force -- their ranking/promotion system is a strange one.
Marines has its strong positive and it's even stronger negative. I can tell you from first hand experience that if you get the job(MOS), you will receive training that's far above any of the other branches. You will be trained, and it will be good training -- trust me on this. However, get ready to be fucked with a lot. The harshness of the US Marines isn't in the training, it's in our NCOs and SNCOs (Enlisted ranks other than the junior enlisted ranks). You'll have to deal with a lot of bullshit across your career. And keep in mind that the "needs of the Marine Corp" can fuck you over hard core.
Navy, as much as I hate to say it, their training for jobs is probably along the same line as that of Marines, except that they don't have to deal with our daily dose of bullshit.
:/
[Advise if you speak to a Marine Recruiter:
-Don't let them bullshit you. Make sure you get your intel contract (I think that's what crypto linguists fall under). If you do not get that contract, don't sign anything with them. And definitely DO NOT GO OPEN CONTRACT at any point in time even if they promise you the contract later on. You'll really get fucked over with those open contracts (It means you've formally given yourself up for any job that's needed, which will usually mean you'll end up being a cook or some other stupid shit because nobody picks that as their MOS.)
~
EDIT:
LOL@ your pay comment....
the pay rate is shit, it will always be shit unless you're an officer.
For your first four years, you'll most definitely be earning less than 2k a month. And yes, you will use this money. Unless you're already rich, you'll find yourself bored to death while on base, or if you have a shitty command above you, you'll find yourself drinking along with everyone else. We really don't get paid that much at all.
(All branches get paid by the same pay scale, so regardless of where you go, the pay will be the same for the same pay grade)

Air Force is the "lazy" branch, and it's where all the cool people who want to join the military and take it easy go. So, I definitely recommend it.
