So what does CEF recommend as an alternative that can be purchased with the stated budget range. |

Are you wanting onboard graphics or a discreet (stand-alone) graphics card?
If you are willing to go with onboard, make sure the laptop has Intel 4000 HD which most of the IvyBridge (3rd generation Intel) processors do.
If you step into the realm of discreet graphics on a laptop, you're going to pay for it and $500-$600 will probably not even get you close. _________________

OP your best bet is a trinty apu laptop. The graphics are built into the cpu and are much more cost efficient. They can play most of todays games on medium at least.
I'd look for an A10 laptop but this A8 one is in the budget.

As mentioned before, $600 isn't going to cut it. My recommendation to you, as I am also looking for a good laptop in that price range, is to find one with a competent integrated graphics chip. My current one has integrated graphics (ATI Mobility Radeon), but can run Sonic Adventure 2 in HD at high settings very well. The problem is the CPU usage sometimes hits 100% (but mine is a Core 2 Duo CPU) and causes lag.
So for $600, look for plenty of RAM (4 GB should do), a core i5 processor (or AMD equivalent) is preferable, integrated graphics (Intel is somewhat notorious for their integrated GPUs, so unless you get the latest ones, I'd stick with the Radeon ones), and a good hard drive. I wouldn't look into SSDs yet though as they come at a premium.
Remember, with an integrated GPU, the GPU leeches on your CPU (and RAM) to run the graphics, so you'll need extra CPU power than you think to make up for it.
However, don't expect your PC to run games that require like a GTX 460 graphics card. You probably COULD run it, but the graphics settings would have to be all set to the lowest possible, and even so, don't expect good results. If the games you want to play require those types of graphics cards, then either increase your budget, or opt to getting a desktop (note: comes with extra expense of monitor, keyboard and mouse if you don't have those already).
Best of luck in your search. |
