While cleaning my PC from dirt and powder I took the fan off the CPU to clean the heat sink better, so the heat sink separated from the cpu

The old thermal paste was dry even though it was working at 60, max 65C.
Now, i have changed the old thermal paste with a new one, of course after cleaning the old one with alcohol 90+.
The new idle temperature was 80C LOL!!! and with some simple video converting tool 110C ...
At first I thought that I have applied the new paste badly, but after 10 or more (I don't even remember) retries, applying more and less, too much and too less thermal paste, I started doubting it was because of that.
The paste I used is "Koing CPU Thermal paste silver"
How is it possible, same CPU, same fan, different paste ...
... and yes, i didn't forget to replug the fan to the motherboard, the fan is working just like before.

Is it because the paste is bad ? or the brand ?
Do i have to wait some time after applying the paste ?
Does too much paste help to isolate temp in cpu ?
Does too less paste help to conduct better the heat ?
Your help is much appreciated, if you have any suggestions...
PS: I'm writing now with a 90 degree cpu.
PPS: I have tried without thermal paste. PC worked only 10 minutes before cpu heat protection automatically shut it down.
...Thank You all.

that's the way I did it, some in the center then using the force of tightening the heatsink to spread it around.

are you removing the motherboard when you do this?
be sure you're properly securing the heatsink or it just won't transfer properly.

what brand paste are you using?

check temps with multiple apps (even in BIOS, if it's supported) - you didn't damage anything during the change, did you?

I thank you for answering that quickly, but i have already answered all of your questions.
btw i use speedfan to detect the heat ... and i also feel it with my finger by touching the heat sink.

This trick works on any cpu BTW. Even your graphics card. Just put a dab in the middle and screw the heatsink on and let it force it around.

tried that too. but no good results still 90C
what concerns me is that before changing the paste everything worked so well at 60 max 65C

Solved: Turns out it was because of the heat sink rotation ...
I was wrong to rotate it 90 degrees from it's original position.
Now it runs at 35C idle and (40-45)C processing games Smile
Thanks for support anyway Very Happy

That shouldnt have made a difference unless you have a weird heatsink that isn't a square and only covers part of the processor when rotated.

That shouldnt matter either. When you think about it, all 3rd party coolers use direct heat pipes right? Regardless of the position all the heat should be sucked away by the copper pipes.
