|
|
I've been trying to fix this computer for a few hours now but I can't seem to find the exact cause of why it freezes.
I know this, however;
- Windows 7 Starter
- Freezes when watching a YouTube video
- Freezes when trying to open a PDF file
- Freezes when downloading (even when just using speedtest.com)
- Freezes when using Windows Media Player
- Freezes when seeing an animated GIF on a webpage
- Freezes a lot less when in Safe Mode, but it still freezes sometimes.
- Freezes a lot less when I take out the battery, but it still freezes sometimes.
You can probably understand how all this makes solving the issue a lot harder. I've tried downloading drivers but it keeps freezing before the download completes.
I'm typing this on my phone right now.
Any help would be much appreciated.

| Sounds almost like bad sectors in the hard drive. Set it to do a diskcheck on boot and have it try and correct them.

go to the boot tab and check the box

Thanks for the responses.
I tried it but unfortunately it did not solve the issue...
I can't reformat right now because I can't download a version of Windows 7.

| Sounds like CPU/GPU throttle. If its on battery its more than likely switching to performance mode for power, and that means everything clocks down. But when on wire its in high performance.

Any errors in the event viewer?
start -> type 'event viewer' into the search.
and disable any form of power saving to see rule in/out hero's theory.

But when on wire its in high performance. | Yeah, I already thought of that, but even if I put it on Normal Usage instead of Power Saver (or something), it still freezes a lot faster when it's running on battery power.
Just to be sure this time, I went to the advanced settings and made sure the "When on battery power..."-settings were exactly the same as the "When plugged in..."-settings. But it didn't change anything about the freezing.

What would I be looking for to determin if it's because of the freezing and not the forcefully shutting down? (or vice versa, or both)

are they all by the same source? give us some of the 'general' info off some of them.
also, has this always happened? can you system restore to a time when it didn't if it started occurring recently?

I couldn't do system restore because it has been occurring since January, and the earliest restore point is somewhere in late February.
However, I just found out that the pc was first used on December 15, like less than a month before the problem started, so it might as well be a hardware problem.
I told the owner to simply send it back since it's still under warranty, but she doesn't want to because then she'd have no computer for a month...
I'm on my way home now, and she's coming over with her netbook tomorrow.
Will update with new info as soon as possible.
Edit:
Well, I just created a second partition and installed Windows 7 on it. Been testing it for about a week now and it hasn't frozen since. Problem solved.
Thanks for the help, everyone.
