Is it still ideal today? I ask this because my friend is giving his motherboard, ram and processor to me. His processor is Core 2 Duo E7300 and it currently has DDR2 800mhz, but the motherboard is yet to be known. So is anyone else using DDR2 here? I was hoping in making this computer as an extra one for lan parties, and other uses.

Also, I would like to know whether there's actually significant difference between ddr3 and ddr2. Im just wondering.

It sucks but if its the best you can do then fine. Honestly, TRY to get ddr3 but if you don't mind, stay with ddr2. Depends what you're doing with your computer. Gaming might lag, depending on how much ram you have and all your other specs.

1) Not really just uses more voltage and has more bandwidth but honestly if you can get 8gb or 6gb in your comp it really won't matter.

2) You can get a ddr3 enabled intel mobo for that socket 775 but it wont change much.

3) Only for memory intensive things like rendering.

4) NOPE.avi on lag.

The difference between DDR2 and DDR3 is miniscule. Money you put into upgrading the speed of your ram will never be anywhere near as effective as putting the same money into another component. Instead, buy more ram, or put the money into buying a better video card.

yeah, That's what I thought. I'm thinking of buying 2 more gigs of RAM to make it 4gb, but because honestly, our LAN parties dont include too much graphic intensive games. We usually just play cs1.6, quake 2 and most other classic games.
