Hey guys,

I'm not very familiar with partitions and wanted to ask a bit about the,. Right now, my computer only has a C:/ drive. I'm going to make a partition of about 100GB and install Windows 7 on it. But I have a question concerning the spread of infections.

I plan on using this 100GB partition as a testing ground for RATs and Keyloggers, and I was wondering if keyloggers/RATs would ever affect anything outside of the partition. Like if I were to restart the computer, start up my regular C:\ drive, if I was keylogged/had a RAT on my partition, would I be affected by it while running my regular C:\ drive?

I understand that I could also just use VMware, but I believe I asked about that on another thread a while ago, and it was somewhat concluded that infections could spread from the VMware client to the Host (i.e. the computer that is running VMware).

Thanks :]

oh, I also plan on having this partition for only a week. I'm going to delete the partition (which I believe should delete the infection as well, given that it doesn't plant itself on other drives as well) after I suffice my curiosity, which is why I'm wondering if I should reconsider this.

this thread is solely for informational purposes

Update:
THE ANSWER IS YES.
Whether you are using a partition OR VMware, the RAT/keylogger has access to the ENTIRE computer.

Some trojans and RATs spread across all partitions and users. But usually it is in the program that allows you to create it.

I used VMWare for a long time now for bloated/spammed sites and testing and i never had a case where a virus got out of the VM (just make sure you don't copy infected files out of it yourself). Im sure that using VMWare would be safer than just creating a new partition even if there might have been a case where a virus got out of it.

It will not unless it has spreading features.
