|
Hey there,
A while ago the sound of my computer suddenly stopped working correctly.
Now, even when I mute the sound, my speakers emit this white noise.
I tried doing system restore and reinstalling and updating my drivers, but nothing helped.
Starting to think it's a hardware problem.
Any help?

Unplug the speakers from your system.
- Does the noise still happen?
Plug the speakers into another device.
- Does the noise still happen?
Plugin a different set of speakers into your computer.
- Does the noise still happen?
Just some questions to help make sure its the system and not the speakers.

Yes

I have tried three different speakers, and my headphones.
My headphones and guitar AMP made a white noise, the other 2 speakers (built-in speakers from my monitor and portable speakers) didn't make any noise or sound at all.

I haven't tried plugging them into another device, but since the problem occurred with all four, I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the pc rather than with the speakers.

Does turning the volume down help any?
Does the noise still persist while playing music / games / etc.? Basically does it stop when you are using the sound at all? |
Sorry, should have specified,
Instead of sound, there is only noise. In other words, if I try to listen to a song, it makes the exact same noise as when I'm not doing anything or when it's muted.
No matter how much I turn down the volume, the noise is always there. It only goes away when I turn the volume to (±) 0 or turn the speaker off.

What kind of noise is it? Static? Buzzing?

Not sure about this, but I think it's static.
I just found out that the noise is also there even before windows boots up, and that when I touch the jack the noise gets louder for some reason.
So now I'm absolutely sure it's a hardware problem.
However, there should still be a way to fix this (though I don't have any idea how).
When my pc ran Windows Vista, I used the black jack. But when I upgraded to Windows 7, the black rear panel jack wouldn't work anymore, and I had to use the green rear panel jack instead.
There was a difference though. When I used the black one, I had to insert the (male 3,5 to male 6,5) cable completely into my AMP. But when using the green one, If I plugged it in completely, I would get a very weak sound. It only gave a clean sound when I entered it 3/4.
So my question is, is there a way to use the black rear panel jack instead of the green one again?
I have trouble explaining this in English, so here are some pictures that might help.

Plug the speaker(s) into the rear port again, then try the following:
1. Right-click the speaker in the tray bar (bottom right default.)
2. Choose the option to configure your output devices.
3. In the list of devices, select the rear panel ports and mark it as the default output device.
And see if that works.

You mean this?
Because I can't change anything there.
Btw, it says my speakers are not plugged in, while they are (into the black one).
It only says they are plugged in when I plug it into the green one, which doesn't work.

oh, i have that too... either unplug the cord or plug it into something... the noise should go away
plug EVERYTHING that has to do with sound out of the computer and see if the problem persists

Realtek onboard audio ?
If so, you rly need to install the drivers for it and use the Realtek HD audio manager.
Those things have auto detect for what is plugged into each port.
If you dont install the proper drivers it will poop it's pants.
The static noise you hear is most likely the driver thinking your speakers are a microphone (hence you tapping the plug makes more 'static'.)

I thought this wasn't gonna work because I already tried it, but gave it a shot anyway.
This time I downloaded and installed the driver manually from realtek.com instead of letting Windows do it, and strangely enough the problem got fixed!
Thanks a shitload! You can't believe how happy I am to be able to listen to music and watch videos again!

Had this a couple of years ago myself.
Unfortunately I didn't figure it out until after I had went out and bought
an optical cable to bypass all of those 'programmable' jacks.
Anyway, glad it helped !
