|
|
I was editing a video and my CPU temp is at 35 degrees, then when I rendered the video, it rapidly increased to 87 degrees, after rendering it instantly dropped to 60 then back to 36
I rendered 3 videos this day and the rapid increase in CPU temp also happened 3 times
Is this normal? My CPU is an Intel Core i5-2500K with a stock cooler
Should I buy a better cooler or what?

rendering uses shitload of cpu, when i did some video rendering my CPU was at 100 usage and temp went up high too. It depends what you render tho. Get a better cooler.

I was rendering a 640x480 video on MP4, WMV and MPEG-2 format so are you saying that it could get hotter when i render HD videos?
What cooler do you recommend?

I would think that under normal circumstances, even the stock cooler would definitely be able to keep your temperatures well below the burning 87 degrees that you're claiming. I would suggest cleaning the dust out of your case, and organizing cables to increase airflow. One time, I opened up my case to find that a small wire was actually stuck in one of my fans, keeping it from spinning. If you have only one case fan, that might be the problem. If your temps are still too high, you could try applying better thermal paste. The last possibility is that the program you were using to measure your CPU temperature was giving you a false reading.
Hope I helped.

It can't be dust since I just cleaned it yesterday and the 220mm fan on the side panel and 3 120mm fans should provide good airflow
But yeah, I think it might be giving false reading, I'm using the Asus AI Suite II to monitor my temps
What would be the maximum temp an i5 could handle?

The 2500k should be able to handle 90-100c, but it's best to keep it under 80 for obvious reasons (high temp = degradation of hardware life).
Have you overclocked? If yes, get an aftermarket cooler (CM Hyper 212+ is recommended, dirt cheap and effective). If not, try to reseat the heatsink (apply a new coat of thermal paste as well).

Cooler master hyper 212+ has yet to fail me gaming wise. Games that used to take my cpu to 60c+ now only get to about 41c. My cpu would seem to have a 70c max.

If you really want to splurge for air cooling, grab a Noctua NH-D14. $90 but it's probably the best air cooler on the market. Be warned though, the thing is a monster!

The D14 and the Thermalright Silver Arrow is about neck-to-neck performance wise, while the SA can usually be found cheaper.
BUT if OP isn't overclocking, there is little point into investing such high-end coolers.

You will need this anyway op, so don't buy a new cooler just yet, but instead buy some artic silver 5 and replace the thermal paste first. It could make it stay cooler. It will be needed for a new heatsink at any rate.

also check that you don't have big cables obstructing the flow of air, and of course, check the airflow as well
perhaps the renderer uses gpu rendering and the heat is coming from the gpu, and a wrongly placed fan is then sending the hot air towards to the cpu (e.g some cases use a reverse kind of airflow, from the back of the case to the front, and that is bad if the gpu is at the bottom and the cpu is sucking in that hot air the gpu sends out back)
