I've received alot of DMCA complaints from my VPN because of p2p sharing of copyrighted content.
Now, I don't really want to give up downloading just yet. If I were to use filehosts such as mediafire/megaupload/rapidshare. Will I be able to download and not receive DMCA complaints from my VPN?
I understand that the uploader does receive them and the files get taken down from the site but do I, as a downloader get them as well?
What if it was usenet?
I don't really know about these things. I just don't want to waste 85$ only to get my VPN cancelled.

The downloader gets them.
Just use private torrent websites with... I think it's called PeerBlock? That significantly reduces the chance of DMCAs.
Note that Demonoid is as private as thepiratebay.

OTL, IPT's the only thing I have.
And did you mean that the downloader gets them (through downloading via filehosting sites?)? o-o
anyway, I can't take any chances. Just one more warning and they're cutting me off. That's a waste of money on my part. So I'm just making sure I don't fuck up.

IPT is good, very few if any people have gotten notices from that site.
And yes. You can still get DMCAS through filehosting sites such as RapidShare and MegaUpload. Pretty sure it's not as common, though.
The reason why IPT is very safe is because it's a strict private torrenting website that isn't very popular, and most of their files are uploaded in multiple RAR files. This makes it so even if you get detected downloading a part of a file, they have no idea what's in it. Just turn off DHT, Local Peer Discovery and Peer Exchange via utorrent settings.
PeerBlock (Or whatever it's called) is a problem which blocks all known ISPs owned by companies such as Activision, Gearbox, Valve, etc. I think it's got a couple hundred thousand blacklisted ISPs.

Are you using encryption?
Though encrypted data can be shaped to a certain extent, no one can see exactly what you're doing. Even with SSL over HTTP, the requested URL is encrypted (a man in the middle could see the destination address, port, and encrypted request).
Torrent clients (at least uTorrent) support encryption, too. Using a random port is a good idea as well.

It's not the encryption that's the problem.
It's the complaints. Basically there are agents that download the torrents themselves and check the IPs of who's sharing and ofcourse submit a DMCA report.
Eh anyway, I'm not taking any chances I guess. Thanks for the help. I won't do anything till I find solid way to execute my downloads without DMCA problems.

Are you sure it isn't them working in cooperation with your ISP?

Pretty sure and this is more of a VPN problem not ISP.
Basically the ones that sent me DMCA warnings is my VPN provider. My VPN dies if I get another warning and I really need my VPN.

I'll download the stuff you need, and mail it to you on an external hard drive, if you pay for the shipping.

If you are getting these from your VPN and you are sure, it would seem to me the issue is that your so called Anonymous or Private VPN is not so anonymous or private. Maybe they are now monitoring VPN's in order to catch filesharers. I've still been using torrents across my wire for over 10 years and have never once gotten a DMCA notice, but I know people that have gotten them and not like I know people on IRC or from a game either.

Some ISPs just chuck them in the bin.
The system goes: The company finds you downloading their property and stores your ISP. They contact your service provider with the ISP, which is then traced back to you. Depending on the service provider, they may or may not cooperate with the company. I'm with IInet and they don't send out these notices, they just throw them in the bin.

The people I know that have gotten notices have the same provider as me and are in my city. Though their notices were for movies, where if I download a movie it's something that is at least 10 years old.

I have never gotten DMCA warnings from my ISP itself. I'm in a 3rd world country, they can't do much about p2p but I'm using university's internet and it's a whole lot faster when I'm on VPN because I get to bypass some of their intnernet filter implementations. So I'm pretty sure it's not the ISP.
And since I'm on a VPN, Instead of them contacting my ISP, they end up contacting my VPN provider due to my IP. I think I should get a VPN provider from china, that would give me more freedom but I can't spend any more at the moment.

DMCA is generally a US issue. I'm not sure anyone outside the US absolutely has to comply with them.
