check out a few brands websites, you can usually select a base model and change a lot about it like ram, hard drive size, graphics cards etc. If your parents aren't going to let you build it that will probably be the next best thing, and at least to me its always better than a store bought comp. (extra bonus it comes with a little less crapware to begin with)

No really, build one. You can build a very nice computer for $800, and you could probably convince them that it's an educational project. Which, in fact, it is. Here I am posting this from my self assembled computer, by the way.

@SGL, there have been a few new versions since then. It's stickied in /g/, I think.
