|
|
I have always been terrible at looking for gfx cards. My price range is up to $200. I'll be buying it in a months time, so I have until then to decide. As I live in Australia, I would prefer a local store/website, as tariffs are pretty damn high.
Right now my computer specs are:
RAM: 1600Mhz 6GB
CPU: i7 930 (2.8 4 cores 8 threads)
OS : Windows 7 Home 64bit
GFX: 260gtx 896mb
PS : 650W Corsair
MB : ASUS P6X58D-E
Right now I'm looking at the 6850 1GB, not sure if that's the best choice or if my computer even supports the card. I've never used a Radeon card before, so...
Any help or feedback would be greatly appreciated. I'll be making my decision around this time next month, so it gives me plenty of time to make a decision. |

Well first you want to make sure you have a PCI-E slot, which you do. Then check to see if your power supply can handle it, which it should be able too, though I'm not sure of your amperage on that PSU or the required amps for the 6850. But the 6850 is a great card so it seems fine to me, if all those things are in check. So it looks like a good setup. _________________

Is it right to assume the 5970 is much better than the 6850/6870? I've been looking at comparisons and it seems the 5870 beets the 68XX's in every game tested, minus FC2 (For some reason the card was terrible on that test)
Edit: It also appears to be around triple the price, ouch. But looking at the comparisons, it may be a good investment for the future. |

HD5970 is a dual GPU card, it's like running CFX without the need for the need for a 2nd physical card. These cards and like all dual gpu card, it will only benefit when playing at insane resolutions.
HD5870 out runs HD6870 isn't a shocker because HD6870 is mid-range and HD5870 is high-end. HD6870 is faster than HD5850 but can only support 2-way CFX as oppose to 4-way CFX.
High-end: support 4-way CFX
HD6990, HD6970, HD6950, HD5970, HD5870, HD5850, HD5830
Mid-range: support 2-way CFX
HD6870, HD6850, HD5770, HD5750 _________________

Hmm, assuming the 7000 series comes out in July, maybe I should wait. My 260gtx can last until then. I'd imagine when the next series comes out, the 6800 series will be much cheaper. |
