|
|
Well Im in a little problem here
I have 2 computers in an office and I need them both to be able to access files from a folder very quickly
- I've tried file sharing but on both computers it is just two slow
Both computers run on a wireless network connected to the building (Win 7 on both)
They CAN be connected wired through a router, if needed
I know nothing about servers so if someone could help me out that would be great
and this doesnt need to be a 500 dollar server just something that can easily share files between 2 computers at fast speeds
Would a server work in this situation?
Do I need internet access to that server?
What would I do?
Thanks

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136745 (note the image that shows the back of the drive, has an ethernet port that connects to a router.)
Or, you could just buy an external drive, connect it via USB to one PC and share the entire drive across the whole network, cheaper than a NAS too. |
I do have an external drive and we are sharing files over the network with it
only problem is that its really slow
mainly working with folders upto 10GB
Will that WD provide fast speeds?
Isnt there a small server I can buy or something?
Edit: Do I really need to buy another hard drive?
Would it be possible to just use the computers storage and connect both computers to the router?

A server is basically a centralized system that shares files throughout the entire network. Any basic computer can become a server such as if you take your own computer and decided to share your media files throughout your house, it's called a media server.
Wired is preferred over wireless.
You can also map your network drive so the system will auto connect thus making files accessing a bit faster.

You speed issue may be more related to Windows 7 than anything on your network. Moving a 5 gig file here at my house from Windows 7 to XP from my XP box takes less than 5 minutes. When moving the same file from XP to WIndows 7 on Windows 7 box takes 20 minutes.
From command prompt type this command.
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
This is what handles network throttling in Windows 7. Unless you put this in a batch file to execute each time Windows boots you will have to run this command. Also replace disabled with enabled to allow Windows to have control over it again.

Since you have an office and use Windows 7 for both machines, I'd say look into "branch cache", "offline files", and those TCP patches you have now heard about.
Alternatively, try local 'torrents' if it makes sense.
Do you also know if your 10-GB folders have a few large or many small files in them?

@AhMunRa
I'll try your suggestion tomorrow
and I am more trying to access the file(s) rather then really copy them over
it is basically 10GB of documents (PDF, word, etc)
the main problem I am having is when sharing the folder it is taking a really long time for the other computers to fully show the files for me to access

Still though no matter what you do, accessing a 10 gig file over a network like that isn't really wise. We try to limit our users network filesizes to between 2 and 4 gb. No matter your sharing solution, be it a network storage device, a server running either samba, or windows shares, it is still going to take awhile.
For large files like that, I will use a command line, less likely to crap out and kill Explorer.

I ran that command in cmd
and the network is a bit faster but on the computer trying to access the files, it easily disconnects from the sharing folder
and I have decreased the size to 1.5gb and I am still facing the same problem
would it be faster to connect both computers wired through a router?

Moving from 1 computer to another across the network isn't really going to be faster no matter the connection. What all is currently on your network?
Let's say computer 1 has an old 3com nic one of the the older 3c905c it's a 10/100 nic. And all other devices have 10/100/1000 nic's, no matter what you do your network is limited by that slowest nic. This is the main issue I have with my current network. So far nothing I have done passed that command I posted earlier has sped up my file transfers.
As to your NAS device, you could purchase one that would fall well below your $500 budget, but I'm not sure it would give you the performance you are looking for. A cheaper method would be to setup an old computer with Linux and configure Samba on it and use that as a NAS device. The same problem though, I don't think you would really see a speed increase in the transfer speed.
A test you could try is to copy it from 1 computer to the other through Explorer, time this transfer. Then do the same copy from command line using xcopy <directory to copy from> <directory to copy to> /y /s /e
time this transfer as well. You may find using xcopy to move this file across the network is slightly faster.

I tried the cmd line you gave me
and also set up a router and the connection seems very fast but the sharing folder keeps losing connection
it gives me the error connect lost try again when i access it
error: 0x80070035 is what im getting

I take it both these computers are running on the same Workgroup or Domain?
Do they both have Network Discovery Enabled?
Is either one running a firewall?
The share you have are you accessing it via a UNC path or via mapping?

Now both computers are losing network connection from the internet
i am suspecting that they have the same ips
yes they are in the same workgroup
i am not sure about network discovery but it is enabled
just standard nod 32 smart security
via UNC path

Then use a statically assigned IP.
