I have finally decided to get a new graphics card after my current one decides to put my computer into an irreversible power savings mode (Have to restart to get back to normal).

So my price range is around £80-£120 (May be able to stretch a little past this but I'd prefer to stay in this range. I'm not too sure about websites but I have a few here.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/
http://www.play.com/

Any help would be much appreciated.

Edit - I was looking at this one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-140-OK&tool=3

At the moment I have a Radeon x1950 pro

If you could, post your processor, RAM (type and amount), and how many watts your power supply is. Mostly this would be to prevent bottlenecks, but also to make sure your computer can actually run it.

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
Memory: 2814MB RAM

I think my power supply is around 600 watts.

I see the processor being a giant bottleneck with any modern graphics card. The NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT would be a cheap alternative and shouldn't cause too big of a bottleneck. An ATI 4xxx series shouldn't be too hateful. Granted both of these are DX10 cards, but any DX11 card will pose a pretty significant bottleneck.

Well I am open to processor upgrade suggestions. I can always update that and my card if needs be.
Thanks for the help Smile

Socket 775 quad cores are still pretty expensive even if they're out dated and gets farted by the faster Core i processors.
You will need to go with a new build before its time to pluck for a better graphic card.

the Nvidia... 8600? gt should work fine in that system with no bottlenecking imo.

I wouldn't go to the GTX's with that system, so yeah, 8600 or 9800 would be perfect. If you really want DX10, I think the 220gtx supports it, but it will bottleneck a bit because of your cpu.

Not sure about ATI though, I've never used their cards before.

I think a 4800 series card would do you fine but that process is going to hold any Gpu from the last like, 5 years back.

Yeah a Pentium D really sucks and is gonna cause you a huge bottleneck. I wouldn't even say you'd ever be using half the power of a 460 at any given time using that processor.

You can't really do much with that Pentium D. You should get a new computer before considering a new graphics card.

just in case it needs to be said for the 500th time, you are going to be massively CPU bound.

also if what you mean by irreversible power savings mode is that you're getting the fabled "BLACK SCREEN + LOOPING SOUND + MONITOR LOSES SIGNAL" then your power supply likely is getting ready to murder some hardware, be weary.

Ok, so I have recently put in a different graphics card (An old one but still works well) and I have not had any problems.

At the moment I am looking at this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-259-SP

My parents have offered to pay half of it so now I can probably get a processor and for that I was considering http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-281-AM

I have recently replaced my power supply (After my last one blew) The problem was around before this power supply and after. With my new card I have run several games that would usually crash my PC within a few minutes but there seems to be no problems (Apart from freezing when I am doing small things like browsing the web and writing in word.

Again, I know I am being a nuisance but all of this is really appreciated.
