When you are out in the world if you go into IT, it will frustrate you to no end when users at remote locations decide, to rearrange an office and then call you for support when they hook gear up wrong.

For those of you that don't go into IT and end up working in an office, never ever go moving equipment that is working.

When I was working in IT, I was the youngest person in the building. I worked with a bunch of old people who were too weak/old to move any of their office equipment so I luckily got to do all the moving, which also let me sort out the mess of wires in corners everywhere. The physical work needed to do all the moving was a great break from desk work too.

Who cares, if you go into IT you are paid to help users. Imagine the perfect world where the average users can take care of the problems, all you need to do is sit in a chair and relax. Isn't it awesome?

Oh yeah, I forgot to say, you are fired too as you are not needed. Smile

Be glad that people are resisting to learn even the smallest, most important things about computers because that is your opportunity to get money. In your place, I would pray for even more trouble.

I hated the days when there was nothing to do at work just staring at the wall, so I took another job. More users, more trouble, more work, double payment (compared to the previous job), it is not bad.

If you are frustrated by people, get a vacation or something and if that doesn't help, you need a new job (a boring one). Sometimes it isn't easy to keep things together and be patient with everyone, but if you keep in mind that you on the other hand doesn't know tons of things that they may know, it helps a bit. Everyone is an idiot from some aspects and maybe a genious too from other aspects. It is just a point of view. No one is totally all knowing.

Being "stupid" in something is not a problem, but having serious behavior problems like being an egoistic aggressive maniac is a problem already. That's when you need a gun and lots of bullets. Or tons of patience and some knowledge in psychology but that is lame, I vote for the guns.

(Not like I said anything new to you but the topic name is "No real point" so why not.)

Very true Geri. Although the issue they created was due to their moving stuff. Funny thing is after 10 minutes the office manager called me back and said ignore we even called. They realized what had happened. Even our down time isn't down time. That's when we get to work on evaluating new software, or developing some bit of code to make out jobs easier, or get to troubleshoot something in depth. Down time is what I look forward to. You are right though, if they knew more we wouldn't be needed.

I remember the times when "experts" could make money even with simple tasks like saving data to a floppy, print out something from a comp, installing one miserable program and so on.

Haha, good old times. Now people can at least open a document and click on the print icon and there is no more money in the "saving to floppy" thing either. Actually we have to know something for our money. How awful. Awful it is if I say so. Smile

agreed, the IT level of the society is getting high, most jobs require a standard level of computer literacy, to really get an IT job nowadays, you'll most likely need to study computer science or get a certificate in an area

Was a time when people didn't attend classes for training in a specific field, they would study under an apprenticeship. I'd be willing to hire someone that had a semi advanced understanding about computers to work support if they didn't have a degree. The stuff they didn't know they could pick up along the way. By semi advanced I mean, they know how to troubleshoot minor issue, a browser freezes, email won't open, program won't launch, program continually crashes. These are relatively minor annoyances, but to average users they don't generally know how to Open Task Manager and kill a process. Someone that has played on their computer, and changed settings, then had to poke around to reset them, or has inadvertently done something to cause them to reinstall the OS should have a better understanding.

Yeah, most people are still ridiculously clueless about computers but who can blame them? I would be a horrible chef even though people have learned how to cook ages ago. From this point of view, I am a shame of humanity.
