In top of that, it is more expensive than the other brands because it is Sony (like if that would be a good thing, even though Sony computers are crap). They try to sell used/returned/faulty notebooks as new so congrats for them. They don't have a normal service and trust me, You would need it soon enough. |
Feel free to bullshit somewhere else. Sony VAIO are nice (looking/running temp) notebooks and their support centres are the best I have doubt with in the world.
| Geri wrote: | | AMD is the other thing that I would avoid, all of my AMD CPUs have died after a short and shitty performance, while I have some pretty good and old working comps with Intel. |
AMD are the cheaper brother's of Intel.
My AMD Athlon 64 X2 has lasted me 5 years so far and it's running 24/7.
| Geri wrote: | | Toshiba and HP is nothing special but at least nothing especially wrong too. You just need to make sure that the retailer has a very good reputation because the retailer is just as important as the brand that You choose. Some of them are selling used junk as new, "upgrade" their notebooks by themselves (when they are obviously not qualified to make changes and of course they don't know shit about repairing a notebook) etc etc. Avoid hypermarkets and other sources where the seller has no idea what is He/She selling at all and get some info about the company before You walk in and buy something. This is a hassle of course, but better than screwing up and buying the wrong stuff. |
The brand itself, doesn't really matter (generally). Good luck getting hardware repaired under warranty with HP/Compaq (Same company, bruh) in less then a month though.
| Geri wrote: | | (Yeah also check feedbacks on the notebook that You have choosen to see if it has some common fault that people are complaining about.) |
Agreed, research the specific computer before you buy it. If a computer has a common fault, someone has likely posted about it on the internet.

Sony VAIO is by far not the best choice, at least in my country. The retailers are nothing more than idiots and I have seen so many "brand new" VAIO notebooks that were faulty in something that I think it is just a waste of money. If you do not have a good retailer in your country, VAIO is the worst choice ever. About half of them has some hardware error. This may be different in other places but here I would recommend them only to my enemies.
Funny enough but HP, Toshiba, Asus and Acer will be repaired here in a fair amount of time while VAIO will almost never be ready.
Guess this is depending on the retailers again as they are responsible for the guarantees.
So in summary, check the retailer and the specific model that you have choosen to minimize the chance of getting screwed. Good brand with bad retailer is worse than not so good brand with a good retailer. Also check that the retailer will repair the faulty stuff by itself with a skilled staff or it will have to send it to the end of the world for getting it repaired.

I work in a retail shop, so I guess that's the difference.
Our HP/Compaw/Asus/Acer etc etc have to be sent off to Australia to get ANY work done on them hardware related. We have contacts in Christchurch (Poor earthquake victims) that can either repair the hardware in the next 48 hours, or send us replacements directly.

I was also working in a retail shop ages ago, and here Acer/HP/Asus/Toshiba was repaired in place, but VAIO was usually repaired in Germany I think. Also, I am pretty sure that the "new" VAIO notebooks were faulty and used notebooks, often with wrong accessories. But it is not surprising for someone who has worked a few months in a shop. I just wasn't selling that crap and sold those that I knew to have a good support and a guarantee.

| Get off the Vaio, I was trolling. Geeze, sf even made a new rule for it. The second one I posted would do everything he needs and gets decent life. I bet it gets even better life if he turns down the screens brightness.

I'm not gonna say all AMD's are shitty & go full out on explanations why they suck, but in my experiences AMD loses big time against Intel. Not only because since c2d it's been the more price worthy option, but also because where I 'work' we get 5-6 comps each day to troubleshoot & repair & usually when it's the CPU that's blown the ratio between AMD & intels is like 5 to 1..

He was referring to laptops, not desktops

It all depends on your geo-location as Sony's service in the U.S. are not bad. Right here, some people who owns Sony Vaio said if your laptop is still in warranty, you schedule a appointment with them and they'll come to your place to perform the service.
I personally still prefer Toshiba as I don't have time to wait for them to come to my place and I'll rather send it to a certified repair center as they
have more parts to test it with instead of a repairman coming in with limited supplies.
