Uhm wtf? Build a computer for under 1400 and he failed?
Was there more to this project like, build a Mac for under 1400? Cause then I could see that being more of a challenge. But to fail building a PC for under 1400, he should just stop touching computers all together.

This kid at my school thinks he's a hacker (and calls himself one) because he found out how to send messages to all other computers in the school using command prompt. He went around bragging about it for weeks until the Admins traced which account it was sent from and he was suspended for a week.

@Farr

From command prompt on XP
net msg //<IP of computer to send msg to> <msg enclose in quotes for spaces>

on Vista, Server 2003 & 08, Win7

net send //<DOMAIN>:<Computer name> /username:<USERS NAME> <msg enclose in quotes for spaces>

There now you too are an elite hacker. Use at your own risk.

To anyone going into IT, study all you can, any OS you can get your hands on. Many companies still use mixed environments. Here we use SCO Linux, Server 2008, Win XP, Win7, and 2 other flavors of *nix, this isn't including other smart appliances we have on the network.

I can top all of these.
I once used a button combo to make all the school computer display things upside down and the IT guy told them to buy new moniters.

Lol. The only thing that could even possibly give Linux negative points is that it's rather difficult to run basically everything (games, for example), as most programs are for windows.

My brother helped me replace a power supply. He thinks he knows a lot about computers now because he managed to figure what shape fits into the other shape. Power supply is one of the easiest parts to replace.

Sigh...Linux will always be the under appreciated OS. I wish Steam and game developers made their stuff for Linux. I would junk windows all together if Steam, and games like Black Ops, Crysis, etc..made it for Linux.

Windows is a standard. Regardless how shitty and crap it is, You don't see 1000 different Windows distributions out there.

Linux has tons of different distributions and even most of the distributions are developed by tons of independent developers. There is obviously no centralized control over the whole process. Everyone is working on the project as they see it fit and the result is: chaos.

They should work on one project under a project manager/supervisor. They should aim to create ONE, and only ONE reliable, user-friendly and widely supported OS instead of creating thousands of small and (mostly inefficient) distributions.

My friend is a Linux fan and we have tried hundreds (seriously, hundreds in 5-6 years, a new one in every weekend) of Linux distros but only Ubuntu was lasting for more than a month (and Suse before it has gone corporate). Of course it is very cool and everything until You want to customize something or just install a program. Then You have to consider that this is supporting KDE and that is Gnome and shit after shit. This is depending on this package and that is depending on that package but the packages are not compatible so a simple installation can result in total system crash and re-install. (Yes I know FreeBSD, but that isn't really different. It is installing every package for every program individually so a simple 200K image viewer will be 30 MB with packages and if You want to install some movie player, it will download the whole internet for it. No thanks. They will not crash with each other but for every program, You need to download a shitload of stuff. It is like if You would need to install DirectX as many times as You install a program which is using DirectX.)

Thousands of developers, thousands of different solutions. They cannot work together, they cannot agree on things, every one of them is free and thus they don't feel the need to adapt to each other. When they disagree in something, they don't discuss the problem, they just split into more groups and create different distributions.

It is chaotic, inefficient and ultimately it is a failure. What they need is order. And standards. But they don't have. It is not surprising that serious companies with profit in mind doesn't want to try developing something to an OS family which doesn't even have some standards.

It would be interesting to see a Call of Duty: Black Ops download page for Linux where about 1000 different versions would be available (I know, just use the source code and compile it... like they will give out the source code to the masses). And to see how much profit would they gain from all this work. Probably they should sell on a price like 1 million USD / copy to make it work. I can imagine how much profit is in this kind of business.

Linux is just not serious. It is fine for geeks who are enjoying tinkering with every crap, it may be fine for servers but it is not for the average user who want to USE the OS and not play with it to make it work at all. It is more like a challenge than a reliable easy-to-use OS. (Ever tried to teach for an average user (like for a girl, or worse, for Your mother) how to use a Linux distro? It is utter failure. They can learn how to use the internet browser, how to login into MSN and Facebook, but that's all, they don't need the rest of the shit.)

My friend wanted to install Ubuntu for His friend. He did. And then He found out that Ubuntu is not supporting wide screen (and this was a notebook). Oooops. What do they expect? As I have mentioned, they don't have standards, they don't care about other's standards and with this attitude, they will never advance forward. Just grow up and learn to work like a team, not like a bunch of kiddies who are playing in the sand.

About 20% of the "I cannot turn on the computer" errors is because it is not plugged in into the electricity. First thing that I always check because people just forget to look at it.

That and most of my, I can't print problems are due to someone else with that printer mapped having locked it up in the middle of a print job so the queue can never clear. A way smaller portion are due to lack of paper in the machine. Still for printer issues first thing I ask is if it has paper.
