|
|
I just bought a 500GB Portable WD Hard drive for my dad
he has alot of important files that he needs to constantly back up
If anyone could suggest me a easy to use program that automatically backs up files like every 3-4 days or whenever they are changed
or something where I can select root destinations and it will automatically back those up?
Some type of program along those lines, nothing too complicated

Buy a bare drive and put it into RAID 1.
It automatically makes a duplicate of whatever he's making, and it's easy to set up.

Karen's replicator.
http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp
Quote: | Automatically backup files, directories, even entire drives! Karen's Replicator copies selected files from one drive/folder to another. Source and Destination folders can reside anywhere on your network.
Options include repeated copies at intervals as short as a few minutes, or as long as several months, copy only files that have changed, and the replication of folder and file deletions.
New features allow you to specify which files should not be copied, and also which days a job should be skipped! |
I set it up for people at work. Works perfectly. Tested on windows xp, vista and 7.

That looks really good, I'll give it a try
Does this automatically run in the taskbar when you start your computer(s)?

Such as drop box assuming you're not backing up porn.

The best way of backing up is to do it manually rather than rely on some software to do it for you.
Also each person may have different purpose of backing up as one may need to access their files from a previous date and if the automated backup software replaces that file, then it's no use.
e.g.
Your dad saved a very important document and used a backup software to backup to his external 500GB. As 2 weeks passed by he did some revisions and ran the backup software during a schedule basis. One day he would like to go back and look at the original document from 2 weeks ago.
Does the backup software replace every single time the file has been changed or keeps a every single record of it?

If you are just doing a simple backup and aren't spending more money, and space isn't an issue why not just use Windows built in back up? It's already on your system and it will do root directories.

Well the program ZacTheSin suggested did have an option to replace files entirely or only the ones that changed
and he is never going to take files from the external hard drive and put them back on the computer, unless his hard drive fails or he somehow loses something he needed
I dont know about windows backup, is it reliable?

About as reliable as anything else. Though if you are looking to do a 1 time all encompassing backup then a differential Windows backup isn't what you are looking for.

Most backup software have those options and will replace files that has been changed. But does it support the option of keeping the original as well as the modified? This is for archiving purposes so your dad can go back and take a look at the original in case if he needs it.
read here
As I've mentioned before, backing up manually will be the best method.

It does have the option to keep the original as well.
You can add tags to the source folder which can include date/time etc of when the task is run.
Please run the program <http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp> and see for yourself. It's quite complicated, but you really do only need to set it up once.
Also @NeverForgotten, I forgot to mention that you will need to enable the option to start on logon.
Simply open Karen's Replicator, go to the "Edit Settings button, then "Other Settings" tab and click the tickbox next to "Launch the Replicator Each Time "username" Logs On
Edit: 2500 get
