GTX 580 is a bit faster, but with its higher price. Most users may go with the HD6970 and hopefully this may drag the price down for both GTX 570 and GTX 580.

HD6970 also has fewer SP than the HD5870

1536SP on the HD6970 as compared to 1600SP on the HD5870
And a lot of features has to be given up due to AMD's desire to run the card on a 32nm TSMC process was shattered.

And in DirectCompute benchmark, the HD5800s are faster than HD6900s

erm, if you read the slides you would see why the stream processor count changed.

it's a direct competitor pretty much with the 580 at $150 dollars less, it's a surefire win at it's price point.

580 is still a faster card though, but the $150 difference is just ridiculous. Expect price drops on Nvidia's side if the marketing department is smart enough to stay competitive.

Still looking for overclocked comparisons though, want to see how much more performance can be squeezed out of the 6950 before I spend an extra $80-100.

Yeah I wish I could afford a 6 series, that's the first thing I plan on buying.

Already know that, just didn't want to type it here as users can read the article and find out for themselves.

No, the HD 6970 is a direct competitor with the GTX 570, which is at the same price point as the HD 6970.

The HD 6950 competes directly with the GTX 470.

The GTX 580 is king right now.

the 6950 beat out the 570 in every game tested on the hardocp review, the 6970 is right on the 580's nuts or ahead in a few titles.

they may as well be direct competitors whether they were meant to or not.

what are you looking at?

I looked at the Tom's Hardware and Guru3D reviews. The GTX 570 tied the 6970 in everything and the GTX 580 at an average of 8 to 10 more FPS on every game.

Tom's Hardware wrote:
That’s a story that’ll unfold in the next three months. More immediately, we have the Radeon HD 6970 and 6950, competing against the GeForce GTX 570 and GeForce GTX 470, respectively. Official pricing from AMD is pegged at $369 for the 6970 and $299 for the 6950. That’s actually slightly less expensive than I was expecting to pay for the high-end board, and a little more than I would have wanted to see the lower-end board selling.

Guru3D wrote:
The reality is that the GTX 580 stays on top of the charts everywhere and that the R6970 is competing mostly with the 350 EUR GeForce GTX 570. Positioning the R6950 is even more difficult as that card is a hovering at many performance levels. That's exactly the essence of today's two tested product, one game is very fast while the other is below expected performance.

TechPowerUp wrote:
AMD's new Radeon HD 6900 series is a disappointment to users who expected HD 5970 or GTX 580 performance levels from the new series. The new VLIW4 shader design can not make a huge performance impact as some have guessed, but it opens up a lot of room for die size and transistor optimization which effectively makes the GPU cheaper to produce, the cards cheaper to buy - more performance for your hard earned Dollar. Unfortunately AMD's Radeon HD 6970 can not meet that price target. With performance comparable to GeForce GTX 570, but a price that is $50 higher it is difficult to justify the investment.

I don't know what the hell hardocp did, but nobody else on the web got the same results as them.

HardOCP did not use benchmarking programs, but rather actual gameplay w/ Fraps. Read the discussion for more details.

This.
Only /g/ spends $300 on graphic cards and run benchmarks all day.
I'll hold up till 6xx from nvidia or 7xxx from AMD, let's see how those 22nm.
those AMD drivers aren't pissing me off yet, aside those stupid cursor problems.

Notice how TechPower up are biased towards Nvidia as their conclusion sounds like to avoid these cards like the plague.

Toms are Guru 3D's conclusion sounds more with neutral prespective and that's a good thing.

this is why the are the best site for this.

nothing synthetic and they actually include minimums, and highs instead of just averages which 90% of sites seem to do for whatever reason. minimum is probably the most important number to me.

I though Toms are paid reviews.
