Linux may not be that much better for you.
Any distro is as good as the next, though myself I prefer some distros to others.
Noz tells me FreeBSD is nice, I've not tried it, but I may do an install one day.
Debian, I have used, has a large community. Alot of readily available help.
I have used SuSe, stay away from it. It is a good distro, but if you aren't using Linux now, this is not one to start with.
I've heard tons of good things about RedHat, I've no personal experience with it.
Knoppix is good, I use that on LiveCD's.
I have used Ubuntu, I like it alot.
Also if you are looking to replace Windows, Linux is capable of running Windows apps from within, lookup Wine. I have personally never needed to run Wine.
I suggest you try out a livecd before you totally dump Windows. See if you like the OS.
As far as what to use. If you install a GUI (Gnome, or KDE) it will feel less daunting than roaming around a term will.
Anything that has an easy to use package manager like aptitude, yum, yast, yast2, deb.
There is DSL Damn Small Linux
If you want something that will boot from flash drive try PenDriveLinux _________________

protip: if windows is running badly, it's probably either your fault or your computer is horrendously shitty. |

So you're saying Windows runs faster than Linux? I think not.
My Ubuntu runs faster than my Windows.
Thanks for the replies anyways |

My Ubuntu runs faster than my Windows.
Thanks for the replies anyways :) | Linux generally is lighter than Windows, but not to the point where Windows would run like shit and Linux would run well, if even decently. _________________

I didn't say my Windows is running like shit.
I said I'm tired of Windows being slow and shitty as compared to my Ubuntu, least that's what I tried to imply. Sorry you got the wrong impression.
This topic can be locked, thanks for everyone's reply and thanks to that 1 guy for a useful/helpful post. |

Just do what I do, run dual boot or run one in a VM, the biggest hog I have seen on Linux is with some type of Window manager, though, and this is where Windows outshines Linux (note not the only place) was I had to hack together my video drivers to enable 3d rendering on my card. I never could get the Linux build of Second Life to run properly. _________________

Yeah I got Win7 Ultimate 32 bit and Ubuntu 10.3 (I think) dual-booted on my Acer Aspire latpop. After browsing a few forums there's so many damn stealers for Windows that's AV by-passable and it doesn't seem safe anymore. So that's why I'd just rather use Linux from now on + it's faster, at least for me. |

There have always been "stealers" for Windows. There always will be.
Don't assume that Linux is free of them.
These latest flash exploits, the reason Apple has denied flash. Affect every OS.
OpenSSH up until a few months ago was vulnerable. The Linux kernel itself is vulnerable.
What you have to do on any OS is mitigate the damage that can be caused by infection. Create a non Administrator account. Limit the privileges your account has. In case of lite infection you lose your user account. This is easily bypassed if something exploits a privilege escalation vulnerability, and every OS has them. Windows are just more well known due to market share.
Google around, Apple, Windows, and any Linux distro all have them. _________________

I know they all have then but isn't Apple and Linux the ones that have the least? In my eyes and correct me if I'm wrong, but Linux is safer than Windows. The safer I can get the better, do you recommend some things? |

There is no one that is safer than any other. Windows or Linux, do not run as Administrator. When installing software logout, login as Administrator or root on Linux, install and get out. If you keep a tight leash on it, you will be able to stay relatively safe. When something pops up on your screen alerting you that there are infections, you know it's a lie. But do not click it, not even to close it. I use either Run | taskkill /T /F /IM firefox.exe works on Server 2008. Similar to Linux kill command. Will close firefox regardless what it's doing. If that blinking box is a java box waiting for you to click it somewhere. Disable flash. _________________

Windows is shitty and no it's not my computer. Linux IMHO is better than Windows, and MANY others think that as well. If it's not, prove me wrong. Compare the two. |
