My dad told me not to breathe in any smoke from my soldering gun, but what could happen? I was working on an infrared LED light source today and I didn't mind the smoke. Now I have a headache. ???

| Don't make a habit of inhaling that shit, there might be lead in it... not that lead free solder is any better for you to breathe.

| Just don't breath it in. I've known people who do it near a fan so the smoke blows away from their mouths. Not good for people around them, but they also did it in a workshop garage or outside.

you might get light headed and/or start coughing a lot
And while doing so accidentally hit one of your eyes with the tip of your soldering gun (that always has a fun effect)

I've been doing a bunch of soldering lately, and all I do is do it next to an open window.

Arsenic, zinc, copper, tin, silver, nickel and other compounds are usually found in solder. I think cadmium is in there as well. It depends if you are using hard solder, soft solder, and lead free, or center flux solder.
Always solder in a well ventilated room. And wear eye protection, never know when you will get a slag pop into your eye.

| What Hero said. Just use a fan, or otherwise simply lean back. Even if it's not going to give you cancer or lead poisoning, try not to breathe it in if only for the reason that it can give you a nasty headache.

| Well apparently it isn't as bad as smoking so you should be OK, just don't make a habit of it.
