It depends what type of thing you want to run, and where your laptop is relative to your desktop.
Describe in detail exactly what you want to do.

Well, I have the desktop as backup space for all the computers in the house and also a local host (using XAMPP). I want to launch a batch file on the Desktop, the files are
C:\xampp_host_JPU_start.bat
and
C:\xampp_host_JPU_stop.bat
is there a way I can make the desktop launch those files when I am using
my laptop? (Remote connection won't work cause it's Windows XP home edition...

Can't you just schedule two tasks to launch the batch files?
You can also try Teamviewer or LogMeIn.
