Still searching for a new router myself...
So far this is what I've found out after digging around, this is what I've came to understand so far (if it's wrong, please correct it).
- IEEE has certified the N specs so routers you buy now should have their logos as a "N" not "N Draft/2.0".
- IEEE has made the certification around Sept of 2009, published in October (wikipedia article).
- Since there are already so many Draft N 2.0 routers, IEEE cannot just ditch all of those who has already adopted so they decided to keep the Draft N 2.0 specs but added another specs which is part of the Certified N specs?
-The certified N specs addes the 40MHz ranage into the 2.4GHz spectrum?
-Routers with the Draft N 2.0 can be certified N with a update of the firmware.
-Routers displayed from websites claims its N (though not specific), but going to some of the firmware updates it shows they're not the most current. If these routers can be called as "certified N" should they post a firmware on any date that's after the IEEE N certification?
-There are types of routers: Dual band and single band
- Dual band: 2.4GHz and 5GHz/ Single band: 2.4GHz only
- Not all dual band can support both bands a the same time.
- Concurrent routers are the only ones that can, meaning you will have dual SSIDs one for the 2.4GHz and the other for 5GHz
-The number of antennas tells you nothing as certain routers will have 3 external antennas but the maximum they can transmit and receive is 2. _________________
If you don't need wifi do what I did and convert your old computer into a Linux router. You can run IPTABLES on it and pass custom rulesets to it to prioritize packets. Makes a nice poor mans game router. Not to mention, I can use it to run my own audio stream server (had max 40 listeners at 96 kbps). I also run my torrents from it since it's on 24/7, and I host a website from it (not a public site, just for me). _________________
