I just read it had DX11. So HD5850 is much better than GTX470?
I have never owned an ATI card, how do they differ from Nvidia cards? Can I still do all the same stuff? I though I read somewhere the new drivers blow, which version is best? | The 5850 is just slightly better than the 470, but it's cheaper, uses less power, and puts out less heat than the 479, which are all good things obviously. All the cards perform the same functions (except Physx, but that's practically a gimmick that you probably won't be using anyway), if you didn't look you'd have no idea if you had an ATI card or an nVidia. And as far as the drivers go, it really doesn't matter, you should use the latest version. _________________

One of my friends was saying something about "water simulation" only worked on good Nvidia cards in Just Cause 2 or something. _________________

JC2 is one of the rarer games using Nvidia CUDA for its water simulation and Bokeh filter for better distant lighting effects.

Note that it's not exactly a fair comparison between the 470 and 5850, as the 470 has both of the Nvidia feature enabled with no AA, whereas the 5850 obviously doesn't have water simulation and the effect filter, but having 8xAA. Personally played JC2 on a GTX465, I can tell you that it's nothing more than an Nvidia gimmick that you won't even notice half of the time while you're focused on the missions. The card would also have a hard time keeping up with both CUDA functions enabled AND having AA on.
Think of it this way: you're paying more for a card that is near/already reached its end of production, minimal performance increase in price/performance ratio when compared to cheaper cards which ALSO performs just a tiny bit slower and in some cases faster. If your choice is based on personal preference, nobody is going to stop you, just one notch of respect down the drain. |

So 5850 is decent? If I can find somewhere to buy a 5870 is it worth the extra $? _________________

Not really, as in the long run it would be better to buy a single GTX 460 and later on down the road get another one and SLI it, as that would give 30%+ better performance than a GTX 480. _________________

Will a PowerColor 5850 work with my motherboard? Will it get hotter than my GTS250? _________________

Yes and yes. Forget about branding and stuff, it's just a plain old dual-slot video card that fits in just about any PCI-E 2.0 slot.
5850 will run hotter, but you are comparing the temperatures of two different cards of different age. As long as temperatures doesn't exceed 95c it'll be fine.

Read the test results and gaming FPS. You have to be either retarded or an extreme fanboi if you choose the 250 over the 5850. |

I have a 250 at the moment. Choosing between a GTX270 and a HD5850. _________________
