Hats don't ruin the game, they just make it bloated. I dislike games that pump them full of features that really don't do shit. You could liken it to how shit windows live messenger has got, it's just been stuffed with a ton of unnecessary add ons. As for the game as a whole, since all the updates and lolcoolitems and achievements, it has been ruined. People do break from team-based play for personal game.
If you want an item to show off that you've been playing it for hours upon hours, you're a faggot. Why would you want to show off to people that you spend a large percentage of your time playing TF2, seriously?

Yeah I agree, I liked the game much better before it had items. Now with all these hats it's probably not helping my FPS either >_<

I'm agreeing with you that Team Fortress 2 isn't the best game around and that it's also quite overrated, but to say it sucks because of the hats? I'm totally not agreeing with you on that. The hats are an optional thing to achieve and to show how supposedly 'good' you are at the game. I don't blame Valve or Steam for adding new stuff just to spice up the game. I mean, they have got to keep the game running, don't they? If they won't the game will die like many other top-titles that stopped getting updates.
