I usually look for user accessibility, whether or not I need to look for the navigation bar, etc. Then I usually look for a good design, simplistic but not lacking in content, rich but not over-frilled. Then I rate it overall by its content.
What do you guys usually look for in a website?

But then he gets no members.
I suggest a sleek simplistic color scheme, using a grey or white base and a darker other color of your choice.
Make sure it has a recognizable name, nothing over done.
Get your friends to join and add a website recommendation area. Where people can say what they would like to see. You cant just build a site that everyone is going to like. You have to get their input.

I said website, not forum.
Why don't we assume that it's a information/content-based website, for the sake of this discussion?

in that case, its all about organization. You ca have as much info as you want as long as the reader can easily navigate it.

make it simple, even a 5 years old would know how to navigate.
have a way to sort by whatever if you doing a catalog.
Just don't overdo with those fancy stuff like random swf playing, voice popping out of no where.\

He's asking how to make it appealing. SURE you can do make something appealing by making it appealing. BUT HOW to make it appealing, that's the question

Smooth Javascript transitions with each page using the same theme/style.
I can't stress how annoying it is to visit a home page that not only is cluttered and overfilled with info, but each link you click sends you to an entirely different looking site or page.

Simple enough to navigate but still attractive. If its too boring or doesn't get my attention I usually close the tab in five seconds.
