Just a quick question. I have 3 GB of RAM installed on a dual core desktop (not duo core). Is it worth installing a 64 bit version of Win7 and will I see any difference from 32 bit?

"Dual Core" is for desktops, "Core Duo" is for notebooks, but both of them means the same, only the name is different.

Anyway I would not use 64 bit system for 3 GB RAM. If You would have 4 GB RAM, 3.5 GB would be used in a 32-bit system so You are below the limits of 32-bit systems. But who cares, give it a try if You want, but be prepared for compatibility issues with 32-bit programs for a 64-bit op. system. They can make Your life difficult.

what the hell?

Core Duo

Intel Core Duo[4] (product code 80539) consists of two cores on one die, a 2 MB L2 cache shared by both cores, and an arbiter bus that controls both L2 cache and FSB access. Upcoming steppings of Core Duo processors will also include the ability to disable one core to conserve power.

If your processor supports 64bit then get it. Only for W7 though, xp 64bit sucks.

there is zero reason not to use 64 bit if you have a supporting processor

It's Pentium Dual Core not "dual core" since all other cpus out there (Pentium D, Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5*, Core i7*) are all "dual core" processors.
At least get the name right!

And 64bit is the way to go, if a program don't work, why bother supporting it? Just find something else and let them lazy bastards file for bankruptcy.

Also it was said Windows 7 will be the last 32bit OS.

*Core i5 also comes in quads
*Core i7 -dual core for notebooks unless set by the letter Q (quad)
e.g. Core i7 xxxQM

2gb or less ram is a reason. But shit, in this day an age, 2gb is the minimum everyone has. But he should probably get 64bit. How much more ram could w7 use on 64bit? Twice as much right? So it would just idle on 1gb ram instead of like 500mb right?

The 64bit editions affect the maximum ram you can use.

Sure, I did not say to not use it, I said "give it a try".
Some users are experiencing problems with 64-bit systems, just because they do not care about some facts, like when someone is asking "what is the problem with flash contents in my browser" and the answer is "because flash is not supporting 64-bit browsers", which is not a problem at all if You know a bit about it.

Secondly, Hero quoted right about Core Duo and it's true, but it is also true that Core Duo processors are (were in the past) used in notebooks.

http://developer.intel.com/design/intarch/coreduo/specifications.htm

The first processors from Intel with 2 cores were marked as "Dual Core" on desktops and "Core Duo" on notebooks. Both of them has 2 cores, but "Core Duo" sacrifices efficiency for power consumption.

It is not that important to argue about it, I was just mentioning it.

gamehacking is easier in 32-bit

Pretty much the only difference that any average user would notice being better on 64 bit is the increased ram capacity. If you have under 4 gigabytes of ram, you won't notice any difference by switching to 64 bit.

I don't know what a "gibibyte" is, but the most ram a 32 bit OS can utilize is roughly 4 gigabytes. A little under that, but a bunch of things factor into the exact number.

The first processors from Intel with 2 core were marked as "Pentium D" on desktop and "Core Duo" on notebooks. Both of them has 2 core, but "Core Duo" did not sacrifice efficiency for power consumption as during that time it was the best Intel can do. Later on, in order to lower the TDP, they sacrifice performance over efficiency by lowering the FSB and CPU frequency.

OP: Go with 64bit.

It just occurred to me, this is a site for hacking. Its been so long since we really could. Thanks bastard people who make a shitty mmorpg >:O

Anyway, 64bit is better. I think he can live without cheating at games :s but thats not my call to make.
