One of my External HDD 'malfunctioned' so I opened it up and took out the HDD and SATA to USB converter. I use it to try and connect my old Laptop SATA HDD to try and connect it with the computer as an external. The cable didn't work even though the power and USB cables are plugged in. Could it be the converter board be dead or is it something else?

Are you sure it's the HDD that's failing?

Well I was transferring a mass of files and the external just 'malfunctioned'. Then I tried the cable with a laptop hdd and it didn't work. Should I just wait for the external HDD to cool off then try again?
EDIT:
My WD External converter worked fine...

I really doubt about that SATA to USB cable....
unless you plug the HDD to an extra power supply..

When I changed computers my external HDD dock didn't fit into my case so I jerked it(My external HDD) open and converted it to an internal one.
Unless you really need it to be external just pop up your case, insert the HDD and connect it with a sata cable to your mobo, so you wont have to fiddle around with converter cables and shit.

Yea the HDD definitely works and the power to it isn't being supplied, I might as well make it an internal.
