No, actually the speed/power and available apps (for some apps) are different.
The 1st generation has no built-in speaker. The second has a built-in speaker, but is just as slow as the 1st gen.
The 3rd gen has a built-in speaker and is quite fast.

There's no storage built-in, r4 cards are fucking retarded.
Just get an itouch 2g, it's not even that expensive.
Or a psp 2000.

There's barely any home-brew, no useful applications, and most games on the ds don't even work with an r4.

rest are homebrew emulator, watching anime
buying a itouch off ebay is just plain stupid, enjoy your scratched screen and a second-handed refurbish shit and no extensive warranty, shitty itune botneting your PC (Unless you running OS X), useless apps, no iphone OS 4.0 ( only latest gen can get 4.0 OS, and is not FREE)
DS has game, dual screen, moonshell is awesome for reading porn, h-games in your bed at night, long battery life, and shitty DRM from gaem maker for easy pirating

DSi is also really fun with friends, if you friends have a DS.
